How ironic that in the same month that National Grid announces plans to bury transmission lines across the Dwyryd estuary to enhance the beauty (‘Tunnel plan to replace Snowdonia pylons’, Cambrian News, 27 March), the Snowdonia National Park Authority has approved desecration of a swathe of the national park by permitting an urban expressway to be built around Llanbedr.

May I suggest that National Grid keep their money, as the planning authority does not seem to care about protecting the special status of the national park. Or better still, perhaps National Grid could become our new guardians of the environment and replace the park authority.

In these difficult times we owe a great debt to our village shops who are doing a sterling job supplying the elderly and more vulnerable residents as well as essential supplies to everyone else. I salute them but we absolutely must ensure that they are there for the future. Taking 90 per cent of passing trade from them will not help this cause!
