UP to 40mm of rain could fall tonight with meteorologists issuing a yellow weather warning.

A yellow warning for thunderstorms is currently in place for much of Wales from midday today until midnight.

This will be followed by another yellow warning for rain from 3am, with an area of rain expected to move westwards overnight giving some locally heavy rain during Thursday morning, before gradually clearing northwards.

Many places will see 5 to 10mm during this period, with a few places perhaps seeing 30 to 40mm in three to six hours which may lead to some localised disruption.

The warning is in place until midday tomorrow.

The warning for Thursday states: "There could be slow-moving heavy showers and thunderstorms, giving some locally torrential downpours.

"In some places 20 to 25mm of rain could fall in an hour with the potential for 30 to 40mm in two or three hours in a few spots. Lightning could be an additional hazard."
