Within these areas there has been a recent spate of accidents, including collisions on the bridge in Dôl-y-Bont, a crash involving a vehicle and stationary vehicles in Glanwern, and a near-fatal accident on the Ynyslas road adjacent to the golf course.
I challenge the county council to explain why there has been a lack of effort in reducing the possibilities of accidents and the apparent lack of parity amongst the five areas within the Borth Ward.
Not too long ago a footpath was constructed in Llandre to form a continuous link for parents and grandparents to provide safe access when escorting children to the school and public playing area.
Llandre is the only area, in the Borth Ward, to have a traffic-calming zone which is of most benefit to the residents within the zone, and 40 to 50 metres either side.
In Dôl-y-bont there are no footpaths or restrictions other than the national speed limit of 60mph from the ‘main road’. Although when leaving the village to Borth or Llandre, via the main road, the speed limit is reduced to 40mph.
The collisions on the bridge, the second of which involved my partner, are according to the insurance assessor a 50-50 situation, because of the local speed limit and the ‘insufficient’ road safety signage.
On the Sunday after my partner had her accident, a local community councillor stopped to ask how my partner was. I took this opportunity to ask why the community council had not taken some remedial action and she said it had been requested loads and loads of times. So, is the county council not listening to the community council or genuinely interested in the safety of Dôl-y-bont residents and pedestrian visitors.
The road from Dôl-y-bont to Glanwern has three areas where the failure of, or the inadequacy of, the road drainage regularly causes flooding over at least half of the road width in all three cases.
The road is currently closed for “essential road resurfacing” which will enable the drainage problems to be rectified, prior to resurfacing which should eliminate this problem before the flood waters freeze causing greater danger and increased possibility of accidents.
In Glanwern there are no footpaths either side of the road, which provides genuine justification of the safety concerns for residents.
In Borth, a similar traffic calming system to the one in Llandre would assist in upgrading the safety for road users.
The recent accident in the water-filled dip in the road between Borth and Ynyslas is almost identical to the one 15 years ago and may not have happened if the county Council had correctly addressed the drainage situation to this area during the 15-year gap between the accidents.
