Madam,

Many readers might have noticed the flourish of wild flowers in the open spaces and road verges around Cardigan.

A glorious vision of red poppies, purple corncockles and clover, pink campions, blue corn flowers, yellow buttercups, marigolds and dandelions and white cowslips.

Sadly, this week, they were all mown away by Ceredigion council’s maintenance department. This is the time of their annual trim before the open spaces becomes too long, untidy and unmanageable.

Blooming Wild Cardigan/Gwyllt yn Aberteifi Facebook page recently obtained funding from Kew Gardens ‘GrowWild’ to promote the growing of wild flowers in Cardigan and we have been busily inspiring people to grow flowers for the benefit of bees and the natural world around us.

We had discussed, with Ceredigion council, a change in their maintenance regime to allow these flowers to grow and produce seed for future years.

Unfortunately they can do nothing unless there is a consultation and local people request it. I urge everyone who has a view to contact Ceredigion council.

Yours etc,

Gwenda Mark,

Poppit,

Cardigan.
