As road verges start to be trimmed it has been a joy this year to see the usually tightly groomed grass left to grow, and plants allowed to flower.

This provides a great resource for insects such as butterflies and especially our endangered pollinator species that are vital to both nature and our own crops.

I hope the council will keep up this ‘uncut’ regime in future years and allow the county’s many miles of road verge to become an enormous linear nature reserve the county can be proud of.

If those responsible for the hedges could leave cutting until after wildlife (and humans) have been able to harvest fruit and nuts (say, December at the earliest) that would be even better and move towards fulfilling some of the aims of recent legislation such as the Well Being of Future Generations Act.
