A double weather warning has been issued for much of Wales this afternoon and overnight with gusts of up to 70mph and up to 90mm of rain falling.

A yellow warning for wind will run from 2pm today until 3am on Thursday which covers all of western Wales.

A yellow warning for rain, which covers mid and south Wales, will also begin from 2pm today and run until midday on Friday, with a very unsettled few days predicted.

The winds are likely to whip up large waves and there is a possibility that some homes will be left without power.

Forecasters at the Met Office say: "Strong southeasterly winds are expected to develop during Wednesday afternoon across parts of southwest England and west Wales before spreading to Northern Ireland and parts of southwest Scotland later.

"Winds will tend to ease from the south during Wednesday evening.

"During the strongest periods, inland areas will experience wind gusts between 45 and 55mph.

"Meanwhile, coastal regions and areas of high ground will be impacted by gusts as high as 60 to 70mph."

The warning for rain which covers all of Wales south of Dolgellau will see 30 to 50mm of rain accumulate quite widely between 2pm Wednesday and Friday.

A Met Office spokesperson added: "Between 60 and 90mm could fall in south Wales.

"Some drier periods are likely in between the spells of rain and the longevity of these is uncertain, but the overall accumulation of rain on saturated ground is likely to lead to flooding in places."
