A CAPEL Bangor youngster has grabbed gold at the Junior Show Jumping Championships of Great Britain.

Carys Thomas, 11, from Tyncwm Livery Yard in the village won a gold medal at The David Broome Event Centre over the Bank Holiday weekend.

Carys, a former pupil of Ysgol Penllwyn primary school, has been riding since she was old enough to sit on a horse.

Her Champion pony Tyncwm Amber, a 22-year-old Chestnut Arab Cob, has been in the family for 18 years.

Proud mum Llywela Thomas said Carys, started at Ysgol Penweddig comprehensive school this month, has been riding Amber for two and a half years.

Carys qualified for the championships last year - coming ninth overall.

“The competition was heavily entered with over 50 entries in her classes,” Llywela said.

“She was successful in many of her classes coming home with several rosettes, placed first, second, fourth and eighth as well as her gold medal and winners sash.

“After the qualifying heats through Saturday and Sunday’s stages, Carys was second ahead of the final Monday heat."
