Aberystwyth II (170 for 7) lost to Aberystwyth (258 for 5) by 88 runs

ABERYSTWYTH’s first team beat their second team by 88 runs, scoring 258 for 5 and limiting the 2nds to 170 for 7, in the Girasol Homes West Wales Conference.

After winning the toss and electing to bat, first team openers Anthony Burrell and Zaid Khan put on 78 for the first wicket, before Khan was bowled by Emlyn Mainwearing for 34, 4 fours, 2 sixes.

Burrell was just one run short of a half century when he was caught by Austin Thomas from Tom Constantine for 49, having hit 8 fours, to make it 93 for 2.

Gareth Lewis came in at number three and struck 3 boundaries, before he was bowed for 12 by Constantine (2 for 57), but Iwan Roberts and Phil Woodland added 41 runs for the fourth wicket.

Woodland was caught and bowled by Peter Rees for 25, 3 fours, and Roberts was then run out by Steffan Davies for 17.

Adam Shaw was joined by Ted Trewella in the middle and together then forged an excellent unbeaten partnership of 150.

Shaw struck 3 fours in his 39 not out, and Trewella hit out with 6 fours and 3 sixes to finish unbeaten on 66, as the first team ended on 258 for 5 after the 40 overs.

In reply, opener Peter Evans made 20, with 5 fours, but he was bowled by Zaid Khan (2 for 43), who also sent opener Tom Constantine to the pavillion for 8.

Tom Williams (2 for 36) then accounted for Ioan Bebb for 23, with 3 fours, and Alwyn Davies for 6, but Chris Gemmell and Steffan Davies then put up resistance as they added 78 runs for the fifth wicket.

Gemmell was caught by Tom Williams from the bowling of Woodland for 24, with 3 fours and a six, and Davies made 40 runs, including 7 fours, before he was caught and bowled by Gareth Lewis.

Lewis (2 for 23) had Anthony Evans caught by Ioan Morris for 6, before the innings closed on 170 for 7 after 40 overs.

Commoners (70 for 2) beat Tywyn & District (67 for 8) by 8 wkts

RAIN affected Tywyn’s match against Commoners in the Girasol Homes West Wales Cricket Conference, but the teams still managed to get a result, with the game being reduced to 20 overs a side.

Ravi Mander (35 not out) and Bill Somerfield (25) guided the Commoners to their fourth success of the season on 70 for 2, which keeps them within striking distance of the Conference front runners.

After Commoners had won the toss and elected to field at Vicarage Fields, opener Callum Taylor started the Tywyn innings and hit a couple of boundaries, before he fell to the bowling of Umar Aslam for 11.

James Bradbury-Willis came in and made 16 runs, but the Commoners prevented Tywyn from putting any partnerships together, and Sam Williams (10) and Ted Hughes (12) were the only other visiting batsmen to make double figures.

Umar Aslam (1-11), Ian Lawton (2-18), Anish Kuriakose (2-12), Arshad Sher (1-14), Will Proctor (0-7) and Guy Baron (1-4) all produced great figures, backed up well with a good fielding performance.

Wicket keeper Ravi Mander and Proctor both held two catches and there was a run out for Guy Baron as Tywyn ended up with 67 for 8 from their 20 overs.

With the rain looming, Tywyn took the early scalp of Commoners’ skipper Rakesh Bhatia, bowled by Taylor for 3, but a 57 run partnership from opener Bill Somerfield and Ravi Mander saw them home.

Ted Hughes held a catch to dismiss Somerfield for 25, with 3 fours, from the bowling of Dave Jenkins, but Mander was unbeaten on 36, including 6 fours and six off 24 balls, before their victory was sealed at 70 for 2 in the 10th over.
