A WELL-CRAFTED partnership of 120 from openers John Curran and Dewi Davies laid the foundation for a seven-wicket win for Pembrokeshire division three leaders Llechryd, after being set a target of 183 by Hook Seconds.

The visitors went over the border once again with an under strength side as key first team regulars in Steve Smith and Mike Carter were unable to travel, with second team opener Davies and veterans Laurence Harries and stalwart Peter Betterly once again bailing them out.

Hook started very aggressively with Brannan Lay leading the way with 61 and Matt Holder (42) seemingly in a rush to get the score board moving as the likes of Betterley, Curran and Michael Godfrey were smacked all round the ground. Curran though picked up 2 for 44 to steady the ship and Godfrey returned with 2 for 31 as the hosts innings ended on 182 for 6.

Curran and fellow opener Davies started brightly and, despite a few close shaves from a few edgy shots, set a combined total of a 100 in reasonable time - before they both eventually fell for the identical score of 62, with their match winning partnership being worth 120.

Llechryd though were still short of the winning total, but a very brisk cameo knock of 27 not out from big hitter, Rhys Beard, changed all that and he and his colleagues, including 14 year old Tomos Davies and Godfrey saw their team through for a seven wicket success.

• Llechryd Seconds fell to only their second defeat of the season in their Pembrokshire League division four match, despite a terrific batting performance by Mike Carter, who top scored with 121 runs in their total of 185 for 9.

Right hander Carter hit 15 boundaries in a splendid knock, but his team mates struggled against an effective Johnston attack, which was well served by Steve James, who took 3 wickets for 34 and Kevin Roberts taking 3 for 38.

The hosts came out after tea quietly confident of adding to their recent run of success, but some steady batting from the top order saw knocks of 54 from Ross Destow and 63 not out from all rounder Steve James to steer the visitors to the required total with seven wickets in hand. Talented all rounder Joe Mansfield with 1 for 33 was the pick of the Llechryd bowlers.

• Crymych’s Pembrokeshire League division four match against Pembroke Dock was all over very early after the Preseli men could only muster 64 all out when batting first.

Declan Scourfield with 3 for 11 and Nick Daley with 3 for 16 did the damage with the ball.

The visitors then cruised to an eight wicket victory as 30 runs by Pete Kingdom steered them to an easy win. Ewan Davies, 1 for 9, and Elliott George, 1 for 4, took the only wickets.
