ABERYSTWYTH Town boss Neville Powell has warned his players that they must start taking responsibility, after slipping to the bottom of the JD Welsh Premier League with a 4-0 defeat at mid Wales rivals Newtown.

The Seasiders will host Bangor City in the televised match on Saturday, and Powell knows improvement is needed if they are to register their first Welsh Premier win of the season against his former club.

His side has picked up just one point in five matches, having gone over six hours of league action without scoring - and they now have a goal difference of minus 10 after crashing to their fourth successive league defeat.

Despite having had a Declan Walker goal disallowed, before the Robins raced upfield for their second goal, Aber could have very few complaints about the defeat at Latham Park.

“The players have got to take some responsibility out there on the pitch,” said Powell after the match. “Once the second goal went in, it wasn’t good enough, and they know that.

“It was a bit of hard luck to be honest, when Declan Walker scored the (disallowed) goal. But then we switched off, and they hurt us. Obviously the game was over after that.”

Carmarthen’s shock win at Bala, means that Aber are two points adrift at the bottom of the table, and Powell has called for an immediate response.

“We’ve got to start picking up points quickly, and there’s enough in that dressing room to do that,” he said.

“But I’m experienced enough to know that these lads have got to give me more. We have got to start scoring goals, because goals win matches.

“We haven’t scored in four league games, and that’s almost unheard of in this league. We’ve got to start creating chances all over the pitch, and stop conceding goals at the other end.

“These players have got to start to gel together, and to gel quickly.”

Powell had bolstered his squad last week by signing Ryan Wade, who was without a club after spending last season at Welsh Cup winners Bala.

The 29-year-old former Skelmersdale United, Vauxhall Motors, Burscough, Runcorn Town, Prescot Cables and Northwich Victoria player signed for Airbus Broughton in 2012, before spells at Bangor City and Bala.

He has scored 25 goals from 105 starts in the Welsh Premier, as well as making two full and five substitute appearances in the Europa League.

“We are delighted to announce the signing of one of Welsh Premier League’s standout wingers,” said a club statement. “Ryan became one of the most admired players in the league during four seasons at Airbus.

“It coincided with their peak in domestic football terms, and he represented them six times in Europe.”

Wade went straight into the side at Newtown for his Aber debut, which also saw local youngster Matthew Jones make his first league start.

Joe Culshaw continues his three match suspension, after his red card against Cardiff Met, whilst Geoff Kellaway may join John Owen as an injury doubt for this weekend’s game.

Bangor City currently lie in fifth place in the Welsh Premier League, after victories against The New Saints, Prestatyn and Carmarthen, with their only defeat coming away to Cardiff Met.

Kick-off at Park Avenue is at 5.15pm and admission costs £7 for adults, £4 concessions and £1 for children.
