ABERYSTWYTH Town’s Ladies put up a spirited effort at high-flying Swansea City, but were just unable to prevent their hosts from completing a quick-fire double over them with a 2-0 win in the Women’s Welsh Premier League on Sunday.

The Swans moved to within 12 points of league leaders Cardiff Metropolitan University, with three games in hand, as a result by defeating Aberystwyth for the second successive weekend.

Emma Beynon got an early goal for the Swans, and Jodie Passmore doubled their advantage in the 27th minute with a superb strike from 25 yards out.

To their credit, Aber fought back well and battled as equals in the second half, and they will feel the two narrow losses show how far they have come since the 19 goals that they conceded against Swansea City last season.

The previous weekend, had seen the Aberystwyth Ladies make the Swans battle all the way for the spoils in a thrilling match at Park Avenue.

Swansea are not in a position to be able to afford many dropped points in their pursuit of the Welsh Premier leaders, and were very relieved to come away from Aberystwyth with a 2-1 win.

Stephanie Land had given the Seasiders the lead on 29 minutes and City had to wait until the 74th minute before Lauren Cubbon equalised.

Jodie Passmore then grabbed a late, late winner with just two minutes remaining on the clock.

In other Women’s Welsh Premier League action last weekend, Newcastle Emlyn secured only their second league point of the season when holding Rhyl and Prestatyn to a 1-1 draw.

Rebecca Bannister put the visitors ahead in the 16th minute and it wasn’t until stoppage-time that Jess Hammett replied for the home side, leaving Rhyl in the group of teams on 14 points.

MBi Llandudno are also in the same position after a 1-1 draw at Port Talbot. Jesci Hare netted for Town in the 25th minute, but Katie Bowe fired an equaliser for Llandudno in the 55th minute.

Cwmbran Celtic edged Cyncoed 3-2 to leave their visitors as one of four sides in danger of the drop on 14 points. Lauren Boyd put Celtic ahead, with Fern Burrage levelling. Gwen Davies then put the visitors in the lead in the 57th minute but Niamh Tinman equalised and Boyd completed her brace on 77 minutes to secure all 3 points for the home side.

Cardiff City meanwhile won 3-1 at third-placed PILCS to go level on points with them, despite an early goal by Ceri Hudson. Montana May and Kylie Nolan turned the game around by the break and May’s second 20 minutes from time sealed it.
