ABERYSTWYTH Town’s superb run has been extended to four straight wins after a last-gasp injury-time winner by Ashley Ruane completed their stunning turn-around at Cardiff Met on Sunday.

The Seasiders hit back from two goals down at the interval to clinch a dramatic 3-2 win at Cyncoed Campus, to maintain hopes of a top six spot at the league split.

Nev Powell’s men are now four points clear of seventh-placed Caernarfon, and remarkably they are just six points behind joint leaders Connah’s Quay Nomads and Barry Town United.

Powell, whose side face a tough away test against Bala Town on Saturday, said that he was delighted with the character shown again by his players.

“It’s fantastic for the fans, and for everyone connected with the club. We’ve won it in the 95th minute, but it was fully deserved,” said the Aber manager.

“We went in at half-time 2-0 down, we’d played okay, but we changed shape, bought on Ash Ruane up front and Alan Goodall at the back and it probably won us the game in the end.

“Ash has scored the winner, but that shouldn’t take anything away from the performance of the rest of the players, from one to 11, and including the two that came off at half-time.

“We do things for a reason, and it’s worked today. I said that if we could get a goal in the second half we could go on and win, and so it proved.

“We played some good stuff, and it was great to win it in the way we did. There’s a good team spirit in there.”

Powell added: “In the first half we were playing against a tough breeze, and we were playing into a bright sun, but in the second half that dropped and it levelled up.

“We got two players up top and got into areas where we thought we could hurt them, and we won a lot of battles.

“When you’ve got players like Dec Walker and Ash Ruane in your team, you’ve always got a chance of scoring.

“I’m made up for Ash, he’s been struggling with a knee injury, and was a bit down after missing a couple of chances against Caernarfon, but he’s put it away today.”

The Seasiders’ remarkable run of four straight wins includes three victories away from home, and they will travel to face Bala at Maes Tegid in confident mood.

Powell’s men beat the Lakesiders 3-2 at Park Avenue in September, but Colin Caton’s fourth-placed team boasts a strong home record.

“It was a massive three points and the lads are playing with a lot of confidence,” said Powell. “There’s not many who go four wins on the bounce in this league.

“We’ve done it with wins over TNS and Cardiff Met, so all credit to the players. When you’re on a run, who knows where it can take you.

“That’s 23 points now, and if we can get to the magical 30, it will be like Aberystwyth winning the league!

“Hopefully we can bring the club a bit of success, because we’ve got great fans and great people running the club, but it’s a challenge.

“The lads are up for it, and who knows. We’ll just keep working hard, and it’s another tough match for us against Bala on Saturday.”

To cap a fine week for the club, Bari Morgan’s Under 19s side ran out convincing 5-1 winners over a competitive Haverfordwest on Monday, to go four points clear at the top of Welsh Premier Development (South) League.
