ABERYSTWYTH University have finally registered their first points of the season in the MMP Mid Wales League division two, as they followed up an action-packed 3-3 draw under the new floodlights at Machynlleth with a determined 1-1 draw at home to Dolgellau last weekend.

Goals from Balázs Gombkoto, Luke Thomas and Jamie Stuart, all headers from set pieces, had earned the Aber students their share of the spoils on a difficult playing surface on Tuesday night.

They also missed four clear-cut chances to have come away with the points, as goals from Alex Davies, with a brace, and Benj Davies earned the hosts a point.

The students followed that up with another point in Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Dolgellau in their last action of the year, with the visitors hitting back for a point.

Liam Powell had opened the scoring after a quarter of an hour when he converted Adam Gasgoigne’s neat ball in from the right flank to score from close range.

Further home pressure saw Powell find Jamie Stuart with a good through ball, but the Irishman failed to capitalise, whilst Gasgoigne and Rob Townsend forced excellent saves from the visiting keeper.

Dolgellau weathered the storm and got back onto level terms when Darrell Johns capitalised on some sloppy defending to score, and despite chances at both ends, it remained all square at the interval.

In the second half, a Powell free-kick found its way around the wall into the hands of the keeper, with Michael Cotter-Jones ready to pounce, but defences remained on top as honours ended even.

With Hay St Mary’s having no action, Montgomery Town took their chance to move three points clear at the top of division two with a 2-0 win over Abermule.

Goals from Tom Evans and Charlie Jellett earned Monty their ninth league win.

Rhayader Town were leading 2-0 in their home match against Machynlleth, with Jamie Evans scoring both goals, but worsening conditions meant that game was abandoned after 55 minutes.

Borth United had set off for their match against Presteigne, but after the pitch at Llanandras Park had passed an initial inspection at around 9am, persistent rain throughout the morning meant the game was postponed on a second inspection.

The scheduled games between Four Crosses and Newbridge, and Waterloo and Dyffryn Banw were also called off.
