IN the only Spar Mid Wales League game played last weekend, Aberystwyth University missed their chance to make up ground on the second division leaders as they slipped to a 3-1 home loss to Presteigne.
Looking to consolidate their top three berth, the students had their chances, but they lacked conviction in the final third as their visitors capitalised on what opportunities came along.
Presteigne, who moved up to fourth courtesy of the win, led 2-0 at the break, thanks to goals from Matt Strangwood and Tom Crichton. When Dan Brazier then scored an absolute belter in the second period, that was to prove the icing on the cake. The students gained a consolation when Liam Powell converted a right wing cross from Owain ap Gareth, but it could take any of the gloss off what was a fine performance by the visitors. The University, who could have moved up to second on goal difference had they won last Saturday, have two more games before they finish for the Christmas break.
Both outings are next weekend as they are scheduled to host Dolgellau on Saturday before then visiting Dyffryn Banw the following day, as they look to round off the first half of the season on a high note.
• Llanidloes were left kicking their heels as their League Cup tie at home to Radnor Valley was postponed due to the freeze, and boss Hugh Clarke anticipates a tricky trip to Tywyn Bryncrug on Saturday.
Lying fifth in the table, and 10 points adrift of leaders Welshpool, the Daffs have games in hand on most of the sides above them, but will be wary that they need to turn them into points.
“They have Paul Grant at the back, I played with him at Caersws, and he has improved them a lot,” said Clarke. “They’re a lot stronger this season, and it will be a tricky game on a tight pitch. If you’re not on your game, you can lose to anyone in this league.
“But we now need to get some games in and look to climb back up the table.”
The Daffs make the trip with a full strength squad, with Clarke adding: “We have got healthy competition, with everyone fighting for places, which will keep the players on their toes.”
