ABERYSTWYTH University’s interest in the Central Wales Challenge Cup ended with a slender 2-1 home exit to Hay St Mary’s in their delayed fourth round tie.
The Aber students, chasing promotion from the second division of the Spar Mid Wales League this season, could take heart from their performance against one of the stronger sides in the first division.
All the goals were scored in the opening 20 minutes, with Aberystwyth University taking the lead when Josh Orton headed home following a George Jenkins corner.
The visitors, however, looked lively on the break and a brace from top scorer Steve Morgan quickly turned the tables.
The lively Rian Devlin went close for the students in the second half, but at the other end Adi Lawford missed a chance for the visitors as Hay held on to win.
Spar Mid Wales League Division Two
BORTH United settled for a 1-1 draw in their Spar Mid Wales League division two battle with Dyffryn Banw at Llangadfan, and although the hosts lie next to bottom of the table, it proved a tough match.
Banw edged the opening exchanges with some penetrating runs by their lively forwards, but keeper Ben Willis and his defence confidently dealt with any threat.
Borth also had their chances, with Ben Jones’ low shot being diverted for a corner by the keeper’s legs - but the hosts opened the scoring on the half hour.
Following a corner kick Alwyn Jones thundered a superb left foot shot from outside the penalty area into the top corner of the net, and Banw led at half-time.
Borth had to change their formation for the start of the second half, with Ryan Davies twisting his ankle just before half time and being replaced by Phil Rainbow.
It took the substitute only 10 minutes to score the visitors’ equaliser with a low strike into the bottom corner of the net, following a corner kick from Ben Jones.
To be fair, Borth held the upper hand as the match entered the last 10 minutes with Jamie Evans having two good chances, with a volley being tipped over the bar, and a fingertip save by the keeper.
Borth were reduced to 10 men in the final minutes when Jamie Evans was sent off for kicking out at an opponent, but they held firm for a hard-earned point.
• Bont were unable to stand in the way of Kerry’s push for promotion as the visitors registered a solid 2-0 win on their travels, with the visitors’ goals scored by Kyrren Chaney and Luke Vickers.
