ABERYSTWYTH Town FC has paid tribute to two former Black and Green servants following the deaths of former defender Mike Morris and former full-back John Preece.

Morris made 52 appearances for the club between 1968 and 1972 and played a key role in one of the club's notable successes of the era.

He featured in the two-legged Mid Wales League Cup Final against Welshpool Town in the 1970-71 season, helping Aberystwyth record a 1-0 victory at Park Avenue before completing a 3-2 win at Maes-y-Dre to lift the trophy 4-2 on aggregate.

Following his playing career, Morris remained heavily involved with the club, serving for many years as a coach with the youth and reserve teams alongside Dai Whitney. He played an instrumental role in the development of countless young footballers in the Aberystwyth area.

The club has also paid tribute to John Preece, who has passed away at the age of 92.

Preece joined Aberystwyth in August 1957 after a successful trial, having previously played for Hereford United and Presteigne St Andrews.

Signed by manager Ernie Richards, he made his debut in a home match against Haverfordwest County and went on to make 37 Welsh League and Cup appearances during the 1957-58 season. He later moved to Ebbw Vale.

Both men are remembered fondly for their contributions to Aberystwyth Town on and off the pitch.
