BARMOUTH and Dyffryn United booked progress in the FAW Trophy by virtue of a 2-1 extra-time win over Welsh Alliance division two newcomers Gwalchmai - but they left it late to secure their victory.
The winner was celebrated by Billy Jones - one of three brothers in Barmouth’s line-up, playing alongside Carwyn and Joey - as the additional half-hour was running out and the prospect of penalties loomed.
Ieuan Brooks made a penetrating run along the left wing and crossed for Jones to convert the chance from 10 yards out.
Up until then, the teams had been evenly matched, with a smattering of chances created and spurned at both ends, and neither goalkeeper was seriously tested.
The half-time score was 1-1, after Gwalchmai’s opener by Gareth Allman on 20 minutes, exploiting a defensive mistake, and Barmouth’s equaliser from Brooks on 35, with a rasping 15 yards’ shot.
Barmouth’s stand in keeper Alex Evans, deputising for regular Jamie Jones, pulled off one significant save in the second spell but the teams remained deadlocked right up until the end of the 90 minutes.
Nefyn United surpassed themselves again by beating Penmaenmawr Phoenix, from a higher league, to progress to the FAW Trophy’s third round - and notch their seventh success in eight outings.
The Cae’r Delyn thriller stretched to extra-time, and the 3-2 home success was achieved by Llyr Williams’ goal on 115 minutes, when he used his head to turn in Steve Jones’s corner from the right.
Nefyn, who had raised eyebrows a fortnight earlier by knocking out another Welsh Alliance division two side, Llandudno Amateurs, from the Welsh Cup, showed commendable fighting qualities again in coming from behind twice.
Penmaenmawr drew first blood with Adam Hunt’s goal on 35 minutes but the hosts’ joint player-boss Carl Jones popped up at the other end with the equaliser two minutes from the interval.
Nefyn were plunged into arrears again on 63 minutes by Penmaenmawr’s Ethan Jones, but home striker Dylan Sion Jones squared matters at 2-2 on 71 and the deadlock continued up to 90 minutes, meaning extra-time was necessary.
Blaenau Ffestiniog Amateurs travelled to Maes Dulyn, Penygroes to play against unbeaten Nantlle Vale side, whose captain Rob Daniels was a former player at Cae Clyd, as well as Cai Henshaw.
With injuries to Meilir Williams and Kieron Ellis - the player-boss lead the attack from the beginning, and after five minutes Arron Thomas gave the hosts the lead when he headed beyond Gethin Jones.
Five minutes later a good move involving Shon Roberts, Andrew Roberts saw Bryn Humphreys equalising for the Quarrymen, when slotting the ball home passed the home keeper Gethin Roberts
Both teams were playing good attacking football, but the defences stood well to defy further scoring in the first half.
On 50 minutes Nantlle took the lead when a through ball from Cai Henshaw allowed Ashley Owen through to slot the ball home to make it 2-1 for the home side.
Pwllheli, whose FAW Trophy adventures in the past took them to a semi-final back in 2012, had their ambitions dashed in a 3-1 defeat at new club Bangor 1876.
The first half at the Treborth ground was evenly contested and the teams trooped in at the break level at 1-1, after a home goal by Jos Lloyd Jones on 22 minutes and Pwllheli’s reply from Gareth Jones Evans.
Pwllheli were still a force to be reckoned with until being pole-axed by Bangor’s double blast of goals in two minutes in the last quarter of the game, from Lloyd Jones again on 72 and Cameron Barry on 74.
