BARMOUTH and Dyffryn United missed out on the silverware as Welsh Alliance title-chasers Conwy Borough added the Cookson Cup to the FAW Trophy that they had already won four days earlier.

Borough manager Gareth Thomas rotated his squad for the final, and they had to battle to overcome a hard-working Barmouth 3-0, with goals by Sion Hogan, Dean Seager, and a late strike by Cory Williams.

“It was a top performance from the boys tonight,” said Borough boss Thomas. “The result was fully deserved and it’s great for the lads who missed out in the FAW Trophy Final on Saturday, as they played a massive part tonight.

“The players deserved the win tonight, and what an effort it has been to collect two trophies in the space of days. On behalf of the staff and players we’d like to thank the supporters who travelled again tonight in good numbers.

“We can now concentrate on the final six games in the league run in and look to maintain our winning run to help us challenge for the Welsh Alliance title.”

Barmouth created an early chance when Joey Jones put the ball just over, but manager Carl Ryan had to make his first change on 14 minutes when Dave Harding unfortunately suffered a knee injury.

Michael Irvine and Steven Bratt worked hard to deal with Borough’s long balls, and Shane Jones and Paul Lewis both came close to breaking the deadlock.

Superb defending and a hard-working approach from Barmouth resulted in few Borough chances being created, but with half-time approaching some great play from Guto Hughes and Tommy Creamer saw the ball played into Sion Hogan, who finished well to beat keeper Tyler French.

Urged on by their excellent following, Barmouth started the second half positively, with Llion Owen, Jake Jones and Joey Jones working hard in midfield, and Lewis came closest to breaking the deadlock, only to see the ball go just wide.

Borough, however, played some excellent football, with Matty Lock dominating in the middle of the park, and a crucial second goal arrived on 58 minutes.

Some brilliant play down the left saw Hughes, Creamer and Hogan combine, before the ball was crossed for Dean Seager to fire home to double Borough’s lead.

Barmouth, however, rallied again, and Dave Linsted fired just inches over after a great move down the left by Shane Jones.

Carl Ryan changed the formation in a bid to get back into the game, and Paul Lewis was moved up front to partner Shane Jones, with Adam Morris and George Sutherns replacing Jake Jones and Daniel Griffith in added fresh impetus.

Barmouth came close again on 77 minutes when Shane Jones, who was working tirelessly down the left, squared the ball to Geth Evans, who fired at goal, only to see his shot saved by keeper Ben Heald.

Barmouth threw caution to the wind and looked to go long and get in behind the Borough defence, but with captain Iolo Hughes standing firm, Borough always looked like scoring on the break, and they sealed their win on 88 minutes.

Cory Williams scored from a tight angle to seal a 3-0 win and bring home a second trophy in the space of just four days.
