BARMOUTH and Dyffryn United finished as second-best at home to Greenfield 5-3 in a high scoring Welsh Alliance division one clash that was battled out in testing muddy conditions at Wern Mynach.

Llyr Hughes’s team had led 2-0 until late in the first half, before the playing surface began to get cut up, and then it was the determined Deesiders who adapted better to the developing challenges underfoot.

Matters became acutely worse for Barmouth in the game’s concluding half-hour or so, as rampant Greenfield blitzed four goals, and they would have got even more but for home goalkeeper Adam Walters.

Barmouth had got off to a promising start, though, when Carwyn Jones fired the first goal on eight minutes, and Chris Wilkins doubled the lead on 35 minutes.

Greenfield had a lifeline on 42 minutes when Liam Robinson was brouht down in the box and Liam Jones scored the penalty.

The home team’s slender 2-1 lead prevailed until the 55th minute, when Sion McHugh headed home for Greenfield, and the comeback was complete on 55 minutes when the impressive Liam Robinson got the goal that his performance deserved.

Conor Hughes then got on the score-sheet to make it 4-2 and the best goal was saved until last when Sam Watson dinked the on rushing keeper from 18 yards.

There was no way back for Barmouth, although Shane Jones popped up at the other end with their third in injury time.

Llanrwst beat Glan Conwy 2-0 in the Vale of Conwy local derby, thanks to goals from the Parry boys, Jack opening the Gwydyr Park hosts’ account on 46 minutes and Callum doubling the tally on 75.

St Asaph City made it 3-2 over Nantlle Vale, thanks to Jake Walker’s winning goal 12 minutes from the end, after earlier netted efforts for the hosts by Duncan Midgley on 30 and Joshua Taylor on 32.

Nantlle had scored first through Aaron Hughes three minutes into the match and their second was an own-goal on 51.

Penrhyndeudraeth’s home match with Abergele Town was postponed, because the Maes-y-Parc pitch was waterlogged, as was Llanberis versus Llangefni Town, as Ffordd Padarn was also unplayable.

The final of the Mawddach Cup, sponsored by Barmouth businessman Will Huntley, will be contested by Glantraeth and Llanrug, who swept through their semi-finals with convincing performances.

Alliance Division One leaders Glantraeth were in sparkling form, as they hammered Trearddur Bay United 6-1, although the difference was only 2-1 at the interval.

Glantraeth went ahead with Dylan Williams’ goal on 21 minutes, but were then pegged back by Trearddur’s Bryn Roberts equalising on 29, only to quickly regain the lead thanks to Mark Bridge on 32.

It was in the concluding quarter that Glantraeth really turned on the style with four more goals - from Kieron Jeffries on 75 minutes, Corrig McGonigle on 79, Jeffries again on 84 and Henry Gallioti on 86.

Llanrug were 4-1 winners at Llandyrnog United, because David Noel Williams scored on seven minutes, Gethin Phillips on 45, Jonathan Sadler on 78 and Sam Watson on 89, with the hosts’ Mark Roberts replying with a consolation on 73.
