BORTH United crashed out of the Central Wales Senior Challenge Cup as they suffered a shock 3-2 defeat against Cambrian Tyres Aberystwyth and District League side Llanilar at Uppingham Fields.

Former Borth player Ryan Edwards opened the scoring with a superb right-footed shot into the top corner of the net, and that solitary goal was enough to keep the visitors ahead up until half-time.

Llanilar increased their lead early in the second half when Guto Roberts converted a penalty kick, and it was Roberts again who extended the visitors’ lead with a cross from the left wing for a 3-0 lead.

Borth, who play in the MMP Mid Wales League division two, made it a nervy finish for the visitors as former Penrhyncoch forward Jonathan Evans converted a spot kick, and Guto Huws-Havard then made it 3-2 with a close range finish - but some last gasp clearances off the line ensured Llanilar held on for a hard-earned win.

Penparcau bowed out of the competition with a 2-1 defeat to MMP Mid Wales League division two side Rhayader, in a feisty tie at Aberystwyth’s Park Avenue.

Two superb strikes from Jamie Evans saw the visitors through in the end, but the Cambrian Tyres District League club were left to rue several missed chances.

Mattie Davies had given Arky an interval lead, but a switch of formation in the second half saw Jamie Evans hit a brilliant shot within a minute of the restart.

A neat whipped ball from Mike Fowlie was then met again by Evans, who powered home what proved to be the winner.

Jamie Stuart scored twice, but Aberystwyth University also bowed out with a 3-2 defeat to Llansantffraid, who secured their progress courtesy of goals from Tom Gale, Rob Carruthers and Tom Ring.

Ceredigion Costcutter League teams Llandysul and Ffostrasol meanwhile kept the flag flying for the south of the county with excellent wins against the odds.

Llandysul lowered the colours of MMP Mid Wales League outfit Dolgellau Athletic 2-0, but were indebted to new keeper Dafydd Jones for pulling off a number of crucial saves to deny the visitors.

Talented winger Harry Wilson fired the Ceredigion side ahead just before the break, after good work from midfielder Lewis Jones, and front runner Ifan Sion Mason dribbled his way through before he slipped the ball into the empty net to make it 2-0 and game over on the hour.

Ffostrasol managed to lower the colours of high-flying Cambrian Tyres Aberystwyth District League side Tregaron Turfs, with an excellent 4-2 win on the road.

The Turfs, who boast a league return of six wins from eight matches this season, started well but they were stung by a long range free kick from Iolo Thomas.

The hosts hit back and were 2-1 up on the half hour mark through goals from Ifan Jones and Carwyn Earey, but the Turfs’ performance deteriorated after the break and the Wanderers took advantage.

Thomas bagged his second goal to level matters, before goals from Mark Bowen and Steffan Evans sealed a deserved win.

Richard Williams opened the scoring for Dyffryn Banw, but Aeron Powell came off the bench to equalise for Newbridge, who then went on to win 6-5 on penalties.

Four Crosses meanwhile had a comfortable 4-0 win against Llanymynech, with their goals being scored by Ben Simms, Joe Clarke, Jamie Evans and Gareth Jones.

There was a walkover for Powys club Talgarth Town as their opponents Newcastle Emlyn failed to fulfil the fixture.
