BOW STREET are through to the quarter-finals of the Central Wales Senior Challenge Cup after they held off a very spirited effort from Newcastle Emlyn to claim a 2-1 success at Cae Piod.
Goals in each half from Tom Williams and Tomos Evans sealed the win for the Spar Mid Wales League division one outfit, in very difficult playing conditions.
Missed chances, including a save from the penalty spot, cost the Costcutter Ceredigion League side dearly in the end.
The Reds had travelled in confident mood following an impressive run of results, and the visitors looked very lively in the opening quarter of this encounter.
Jake Kelly, Dion Phillips and Adrian Hazelby had decent chances, but both teams did well to play decent football on a pitch that had been hit hard by the heavy rain.
The Magpies, however, slowly grew into the game and they were rewarded when Tom Williams scrambled the ball into the net, following a corner kick.
The Reds kept composure and a couple of minutes before half time they levelled when Sam Skinner was sharper than anyone else in the penalty box to fire home.
There was little in the game after the interval, but the biggest turning point arrived when Emlyn raider Cory Davies was upended in the box on the hour.
The normally reliable Huw ‘Jonah’ Jones stepped up for the spot kick, but his shot was superbly saved by keeper Ben Willis.
The Reds enjoyed a couple of great chances after this, with one effort hitting the woodwork and another testing Willis, but missed opportunities proved costly.
Bow Street punished them when Tomos Evans ran through the visiting defence and tucked the ball in past the keeper, and despite a late rally by Emlyn, the Magpies held on for a place in the last eight.Elsewhere in the competition, Llanfair United marched on into the quarter-finals with a hard fought 2-1 win over Kerry, on a blustery and cold Sunday afternoon.
Llanfair were 1-0 up inside the first minute when Paul Griffiths whipped in a free kick from the right hand touch line, and with the help of the strong wind, the ball bent it into the top corner of the net.
The hosts continued their great start with another goal after seven minutes when a goal kick by keeper Mark Richards travelled upfield in the wind, and was headed back by a Kerry defender, only for Karl Seliaerts to nip in and finish calmly to net his first goal for the club.
Just before half-time, Kerry pulled a goal back when Llanfair failed to clear their lines from a long free kick, and Matt Mumford fired in his first goal since returning to his home club from Berriew.
The second half was scrappy affair, with both teams having chances to score, but Llanfair held on for a battling 2-1 win.
Radnor Valley meanwhile bowed out of the Central Wales Cup with a 3-2 defeat at home against rivals Llandrindod Wells.
The visitors played with the wind at their backs in the first half, and broke the deadlock when a corner was headed past Will Fowden by one of his own players.
Stuart Williams doubled their lead five minutes before the break, with a well-struck shot on the turn, and in first-half stoppage time a low cross was converted at the far post by former player manager Gareth Jones to make it 3-0 at the interval.
The Goats made use of the elements in the second half, with Joey Price converting a 52nd minute penalty, and on 80 minutes Elliot Morris scrambled the ball home to make it 3-2 - but despite further chances, Llandrindod held on for the win.
Waterloo Rovers hit back twice to beat Dyffryn Banw 4-3 in extra time, through goals from Chris Proctor, with a brace, Will Pritchard and Andrew Gwilt. Gerallt Evans had scored a hat-trick for Banw.
In midweek, Caersws beat high flying Spar League side Welshpool Town 3-1, courtesy of two early second half goals from Luke Sherbon and Richard Davies.
Ian Probert had brought Welshpool back in contention, to cancel out Rhydian Davies’ early strike.
Guilsfield meanwhile fielded a strong side at Llanidloes, who matched the Cymru Alliance side for long periods of the game. It was the villagers who marched on with a 1-0 win, thanks to a goal 10 minutes from time for captain Chris Cathrall..
