BOW STREET are looking to reverse their cup final ‘curse’ when they take on division one runners-up Welshpool Town in the Spar Mid Wales League Cup Final at Carno this Saturday (ko 5pm).

They will hoping to make it fifth time lucky, having lost four finals in 11 years, but realise that Welshpool will be the favourites in the final.

“The first team has been phenomenal, and the management of Barry Williams, Richard Lucas and Dylan James deserve great credit,” said chairman Wyn Lewis.

“It’s been a long, drawn out season, with a lot of catching up to do due to the weather, but to win the final would be a tremendous achievement.

“We reached the final with a comprehensive defeat of much-fancied Llanfair at Llanidloes on Tuesday night, and it is our fifth League Cup Final in the 11 seasons since our promotion to the third tier of Welsh football.

“We hope it will be fifth time lucky, having lost four previous finals, but Welshpool will be the favourites in the final, and we will be happy to be the underdogs.

“Welshpool are a big club, who have played in the Welsh Premier League, and they have been up at the top all season, but we beat them at home, and drew away.”

It is a huge week for the club, after their reserve team secured the Cambrian Tyres Aberystwyth District League division one title, by virtue of title rivals Bont losing their last game to Tregaron.

The Magpies, who had finished as runners-up to Bont last year, had lost just one league game all season to pip the defending champions to the title on goal difference.

Bow Street Reserves were also involved in two cup finals this week, firstly taking on Tregaron Turfs in the Cambrian Tyres League Cup on Tuesday at Park Avenue.

The Turfs edged a 2-1 with an absolute screamer from Ifan Jones in the dying minutes, after Bow Street veteran Peter James had cancelled out a first half goal from Gareth Davies.

The Magpies, however, will return to the home of Aberystwyth to take on division two champions Tywyn/Bryncrug Reserves in the final of the Len and Julia Newman Memorial Trophy this Friday (ko 7pm).

“They are a young side, and have also done really well this season,” said Lewis.

“We are all in it together at Bow Street, we pull together for the good of the whole club, and it could be a terrific week if the Reserves can go on and win more trophies.”

Meanwhile Bow Street’s first team had beaten Llanfair 4-0 in their semi-final last Tuesday to reach their final.

Garmon Nutting opened the scoring with a great strike, and Mark Gornall’s low free kick went in off the the post to double their lead.

Street remained on top and they went even further ahead when Neil Evans connected with another textbook Gornall free kick to make it 3-0.

Further second half pressure saw another perfectly placed free kick from Gornall sliced behind for a corner, and Ifan Burrell went through at a tight angle and saw his strike rattle the bar.

Llanfair’s hopes faded when they were reduced to 10 men for a second yellow card, and Tom Evans put the game beyond doubt when he slotted home to make it 4-0.

Already assured of a top five finish, and with one eye on the Cup final, Street completed their league campaign with a 2-0 defeat at Llandrindod Wells on Monday, having lost 4-3 at champions Llanrhaeadr in their penultimate match last weekend.

This weekend’s final promises to be a bumper occasion at Carno, with the ER Jenkins Division Two Cup Final between Llansantffraid and Montgomery Town kicking off at 2pm, before the League Cup Final starts at 5pm.
