CARNO will fly the flag for the Spar Mid Wales League in the last 16 of the FAW Trophy after they registered an excellent 3-0 fourth round triumph at Penycae.
Second half goals from Gregg Brown and Richie Evans, with a brace, evenutally secured a worthy win over the Welsh National League (Wrexham Area) outfit.
The first half was a tight affair, with defences on top, and although the hosts had the majority of the ball, the Carno defence and midfield were solid.
Ioan Humphreys had Carno’s best chance of the half, when he headed over from a few yards out, but Kris Williams made a one-on-one save to deny the Penycae winger in their best chance of the half.
Carno made the perfect start to the second half when Peter Rees fed the ball to Gregg Brown, who rifled into the bottom corner within three minutes of the restart.
Penycae stepped up their pressure and they had their best spell of the game, with Ger Jones conceding a penalty, only for the winger to blaze over from the spot.
Carno, however, doubled the lead with a fantastic individual goal by Richie Evans.
Peter Rees played a diagonal pass to Evans, who turned his man inside out before curling the ball into the top corner of the home side’s goal from 25 yards out.
Evans then put the game to bed when he tapped home from a Jordan Jones cross to see the Greens through to the last 16.
Machynlleth bowed out of the competition with a 4-2 defeat against Lock Stock Welsh Alliance high-fliers Trearddur Bay.
Goals from Jordie Murphy, Rhys Brown, Ryan Jones and Craig Moore secured the visitors a hard-earned win, but Machynlleth had stayed in touch, courtesy of their goals by Drew Page and Sion Williams.
Meanwhile Llanrhaeadr also bowed out with a 4-2 defeat to Brecon Corries, despite goals from Iwan Matthews and Ben White, whilst Radnor Valley were also beaten 3-1 at home against Chirk AAA.
