ST DOGMAELS striker Trefor Woodgate suffered an horrific leg break against rivals Cardigan Town in the quarter-finals of the Cwpan Goffa Dai ‘Dynamo’ Davies - with the game being abandoned with just a minute to play, writes Andrew Clarke.

Woodgate collapsed in agony after he tried to block a clearance from Magpies’ skipper and sweeper Steve Blackford, and many in attendance were visibly shocked at seeing the popular player in obvious discomfort.

Woodgate, a bricklayer who has recently moved away to work, had come home for this local derby, but he now faces a very long lay-off, with his footballing future in the balance.

He underwent surgery at Glangwili Hospital in Carmarthen in midweek to repair a double fracture of his lower leg, and local football followers have wished him a speedy recovery.

The game itself had been a bit of a damp squib at times, but it was the Saints who drew first blood when Ioan Owen tapped home after home keeper Casey Walters had parried.

Walters made amends with a superb save to deny Jason Williams from a header - and the Magpies’ custodian did the same again in the second half to deny Woodgate and Tom Phillips.

Cardigan dominated in the last quarter, following the introduction of midfielder James Evans and substitute striker Slawomir Waleczek, and the latter was unlucky when he saw a shot bounce harmlessly off the post.

An equaliser finally arrived when roving full back Joost Burki drove home a powerful shot from just inside the penalty box in the dying minutes, but the game was then abandoned and will be replayed this weekend.

Costcutter Ceredigion League leaders Bargod Rangers marched on into the last four with a 3-2 extra time win over Llanrhystud, and the Parc Puw men will take on Newcastle Emlyn in their semi-final tonight (Wednesday).

The score had been 1-1 after 90 minutes, and the Cambrian Tyres League division two leaders went 2-1 up in extra time, with their goals being scored by Lee Jones and Liam Lewis.

Rangers, who have already booked a place in the final of the Costcutter Ceredigion League Cup, took charge through the front running duo of Sam Skinner and Dion Phillips, with the former claiming a superb hat-trick and Phillips adding the other goal.

Crannog, who are the other Costcutter League Cup finalists, fought back from two goals down to draw 2-2 with Penrhyncoch Reserves - and held their nerve to win on penalties.

Chris Jones opened the scoring after just five minutes for Penrhyn, and midway through the first half Steve Beresford doubled their advantage.

Young Penrhyn keeper Hefin Hopkins then kept Crannog out with a few excellent saves, but they eventually drew level with goals in each half by Nat Brown and Rhydian Roberts.

A superb save denied Beresford right on the stroke of full time, but extra time could not separate them and Crannog won 3-2 in the shoot-out.

Crannog play Llandysul in the quarter-finals this weekend, with the winners facing Cardigan or St Dogmaels.
