FIVE-STAR Nefyn United produced a big shock as they lifted the Bob Owen Memorial Shield with a superb 5-0 triumph over high-flying Menai Bridge Tigers at Porthmadog.

The Tigers, who have only lost one league match this season, went into the match as favourites, but Nefyn turned on the style to emerge as convincing winners.

It was sweet success for Nefyn, who were beaten 3-1 in last season’s final by Bro Goronwy, before then going on to capture the coveted North Wales Coast Junior Cup last summer.

Having knocked out the holders in the last four of this season’s competition, they faced a tough test against the Tigers, who were 5-1 winners in their semi-final against Talysarn Celts.

Just four days earlier, Menai Bridge Tigers had beaten Nefyn in the last-four of the Cwpan Gwynedd Meditel, and they were being hotly-tipped to lift the first piece of silverware this season.

Nefyn, however, went ahead on 25 minutes when Llion Jones continued his excellent recent form with another neat finish, and the Tigers never found a way back from there.

United continued to stay tight at the back and win the midfield battles, and they doubled their lead before the break when Dylan Sion Jones hit the target after a good spell of possession.

It got even worse for the Tigers five minutes into the second half as Daniel Jones made it 3-0, and United looked in firm control of the game against the title favourites.

The Tigers battled to find a way back into the game, but they were punished again for some hesitant defending on 75 minutes when Lucas Altovick pounced to score a decisive fourth goal.

It was left Altovick to add further salt into the Tigers’ wounds when he was on hand to complete the nap hand on 83 minutes and seal an emphatic and very memorable cup triumph.
