BALA Town showed terrific character as they battled to the end to secure a 3-2 victory over Newtown, courtesy of Henry Jones’ injury time strike.

The home win lifted the Lakesiders into fourth spot, and boss Colin Caton could take heart from their perfect record at Maes Tegid, whilst also addressing room for improvement.

“We’ve got a great record at Maes Tegid, with five wins from five games in the league, but we’re making things hard for ourselves with the goals we concede,” said the Bala manager.

“We need to defend better, and box games off, but you can’t fault the effort and commitment of the players.“Conditions were horrendous, but we showed great endeavour and determination to get the win, like we have done a few times this season.

“We now need to start picking up some wins away from home, starting with Saturday’s trip to Carmarthen.”

As Storm Callum battered North Wales, it was horrendous playing conditions for both teams at Maes Tegid.

The first real chance of the game came on 12 minutes when Steven Tames’ header was superbly cleared off the line by Craig Williams.

After quarter of an hour, the hosts broke the deadlock when a corner was floated in by Jones, and Chris Venables headed home at the near post.

Newtown tried to hit back as a Williams free kick saw Mills-Evans get something on it, but it went way wide.

Mills-Evans headed over again, and dangerous crosses from Callum Roberts and Steve Leslie caused problems, but at the other end Venables went closer to a second just before the break, but home goalkeeper Dave Jones was equal to his curling effort.

Within three minutes of the re-start it the Robins levelled matters as Neil Mitchell turned his defender in the box, and was taken down, with referee Lee Evans pointing to the spot.

Leslie stepped up and although Morris guessed right, the penalty had too much on it and found the corner.

Newtown pushed on and Mitchell saw his strike tipped over, and then Nick Rushton’s shot from the resulting short corner was deflected over.

The Robins, however, were reduced to 10 men on the hour as skipper Williams mistimed a tackle on Sean Smith and was shown a second yellow card.

Rushton chipped Morris, but the keeper back peddled and tipped it over, but then Bala restored the lead on 72 minutes as Nathan Burke was bundled over in the box and Venables’ spot kick sent Jones the wrong way.

Bala pushed on in rainswept conditions and Jones denied Burke from close range, but then out of nowhere the Robins broke to force an equaliser.

Substitute Ethan Jones found Roberts out wide and he crossed for the back post, where Boundford powered a header past home keeper Morris.

Ten-man Newtown tried to soak up the late pressure, but in injury time Jones weaved through, and his ball across the box was turned into his own net by Joe Kenton to seal the win.
