PWLLHELI, buoyed up by memories of a spectacular 6-5 win over Gaerwen in an early-season Welsh Cup qualifier, got the better of their Anglesey rivals again in the Mawddach Cup.

The first round match at Recreation Ground, which provided Barry Evans’ team with a cup double, proved to be another high scoring affair, producing a 5-3 scoreline, after Gaerwen had battled back from behind three times.

Pwllheli led twice in the first half, courtesy of goals from Lee Platter on 10 minutes and Rhodri Scott on 25, only for Gaerwen to respond both times through Liam Morris on 22 and Arwel Williams on 39 minutes.

Scott struck again for the home side seven minutes into the second half, but then Morris clawed back Gaerwen’s third equaliser on 63 minutes.

It was after that when Pwllheli strode clearly ahead with an own-goal on 74 minutes and Mark Roberts’ crucial late netted effort, to end the team’s barren spell of six straight defeats.

Welsh Alliance title favourites Conwy Borough extended their winning ways in the cup by beating near neighbours Mochdre Sports 4-2, and featured a hat-trick by Dean Seager, scoring on 10, 37 and 48 minutes.

Conwy added a late fourth goal from Jack Hoult virtually on the final whistle, whereas Mochdre had kept pace for so long thanks to Scott Roberts finding the target on 28 minutes and Jordan Phillips on 65 minutes.

Nantlle Vale have had little to enthuse about for months as the division one’s basement strugglers, but they came good for a change in the cup, winning 4-2 at Glan Conwy, who head the division two rankings.

Vale’s victory was secured by Daniel Evans scoring on five and 75 minutes, Phil Warrington on 47 and Aled Steele on 68, while Glan Conwy were left short, with two replies from Jamie Jones on 66 and Aaron Boyle on 74.

Llandyrnog United made it 3-1 over Llanerchymedd on their own Cae Tan Parc ground, courtesy of goals from Mark Rogers on 40 and 62 minutes and Josh Taylor on 53, with Mark Jones converting a penalty on 83.

Although 12 first round ties had been scheduled, the other eight were postponed, because of waterlogged pitches, along with all three league fixtures in the Alliance. These included in division one, Barmouth and Dyffryn United at home against Llandudno Albion and Penrhyndeudraeth away to Mynydd Llandygai.

• The Welsh Alliance has received 10 applications from clubs hoping to secure membership or promotion to division two for season 2018/19.

These include Gwynedd League clubs Bontnewydd, Bro Goronwy, Gwalchmai, Holyhead Town, Llanystumdwy and Menai Bridge; Vale of Conwy Football League clubs Llansannan, Llanfairfechan and Kinmel Bay and unafilliated Glantraeth.

All grounds will be inspected by the end of January to comply with FAW regulations, and clubs will meet the League ground criteria by the 30 May to be considered for promotion.
