LLANIDLOES Town extended their lead at the top of the table to 16 points with a 3-2 win over Four Crosses, in the only game to go ahead in the MMP Mid Wales League division one last weekend.

With most football fixtures being wiped out for a third successive weekend by the wet weather, the groundstaff at Llanidloes deserved great credit for managing to get their fixture on at Victoria Avenue.

It took just a minute for the Daffs to open their account when Connor Bird converted from the penalty spot, after Ashley Owen was brought down in the area by Crosses goalkeeper Adam Clewlow.

The determined visitors hit back strongly, however, and Ben Simms netted twice to turn the tables and take a shock 2-1 lead, before the Daffs made a positive response.

Llanidloes, still unbeaten at home in the league this season, replied before half-time when Jack Biggs scored with a diving header following Owen’s corner to make it 2-2 at the interval.

The Daffs then took more control in the second half, and it was another penalty from Bird with 20 minutes to go, after great work by Dafydd Carruthers, that sealed the three points.

The win moved the Daffs 16 points clear of second-placed Builth Wells, who have three games in hand after their scheduled match at Montgomery Town was postponed due to the wet weather.

The rest of the league schedule was also wiped out, including Berriew against Caersws, Radnor Valley against Kerry, Tywyn Bryncrug against Carno, and Welshpool Town against Llandrindod Wells.

Meanwhile Bow Street’s Barry Williams has been awarded he Division One Manager of the Month for January, with Welshpool Town’s Will Thomas picking up the Division One Player of the Month.

The Division Two Manager of the Month was Mark Proctor of Waterloo Rovers, with Jake O’Donnell of Forden United picking up the Player of the Month award.

Aberaeron’s rearranged MMP Mid Wales League Cup second round tie was also postponed last weekend, with the winners due to travel to take on Caersws in the last eight of the competition.

Llanidloes Town are scheduled to entertain Kerry in their League Cup quarter-final tie this weekend, whilst the other quarter-final matches will see Berriew have home advantage against Montgomery, and Builth Wells host Four Crosses at a later date.

In the Central Wales Cup quarter-finals, Berriew host Brecon Corries this Saturday, before Welshpool host Penrhyncoch next Tuesday, Llanidloes entertain Guilsfield next Wednesday, and Bishops Castle host Builth Wells on Saturday, 14 March.
