High-flying Llanidloes Town bid to keep their title rivals at an arm’s length as they host Welshpool in the MMP Mid Wales League division one on Saturday.
With just three games to go, Llani are targeting maximum points as they look to see off the challenge of closest rivals Llanfair United, Berriew and Caersws.
“We’ve got three games remaining, and we have to look to win them all, and see what happens,” said Llani manager Hugh Clarke.“Llanfair are still favourites for the league, but a lot can still happen, and I expect there to be a few twists and turns.
“All we can do is concentrate on ourselves, and being in two Cups as well, there’s everything to play for this season.
“We’ve now got Welshpool, and we’ll look to be positive. They are good going forward, but not so strong at the back.”
The Daffs are looking in good shape with a near full strength squad, their only absentee being Ed Clarke, who is currently sidelined with a groin injury.
Llani had stayed on course for silverware by sealing their place in the semi-final of the Central Wales Cup by overcoming Four Crosses 4-2 at Victoria Avenue.
The Daffs took the lead when fullback Drew Reynolds converted a George Clarke cross at the back post - but they then found themselves trailing at the interval to a brace from Gareth Jones.
The hosts turned it around after the break, with assistant-boss Adam Worton heading in a Matthew Savage corner, and substitute Josh Hartrick then smashed home a 20-yard effort after cutting in.
Victory was assured when Matthew Savage got a fourth goal, following a long throw-in, keeping Llani on course for a possible cup double, as they are also through to the Radnorshire Cup final.
The Daffs will meet either Llanrhaeadr or Builth Wells in the last four of the Central Wales Cup at Caersws on Tuesday, 9 April, while Berriew will take on Radnor Valley in the other semi-final at Llanidloes’ Victoria Avenue seven days earlier.
Although the Daffs had no league game last weekend, their chief rivals failed to significantly close the gap, with Llanfair and Berriew both being held to 2-2 draws.
Llanfair let slip a two-goal lead as Builth Wells fought back from two goals down to salvage a point, after Karl Seliaerts and Ben Jones had put the visitors ahead.
Chris Roff pulled a goal back with just five minutes to go, and then, in the last minute, the referee pointed to the spot after a tussle in the box and Tom Bethell held his nerve to convert the spot kick.
Berriew snatched a draw from the jaws of defeat at Welshpool on Friday night as injury time goals from Joe Haycock and Tomos Williams cancelled out goals from Pool’s Sam Evans and Ricky Litchfield.
Llanfair, are five points behind the leaders in third, with three games in hand, while Berriew trail by six points, having played two games fewer than the Daffs.
Caersws are now up to second place, four points adrift of Llani with both sides on the same number of games, after Lance Jones and a Will Fowden own goal sealed a 2-0 win over Radnor Valley.
Nick Williams scored a hat-trick as Tywyn/Bryncrug beat visitors Kerry by 4-2, with Cullen Rodgers also on target. Ben Hendleman and Luke Mumford replied.
Nathan Prodger scored twice as Llansantffraid beat Aberaeron 2-0, whilst Sam Wills scored twice as Carno won 5-3 at bottom club Churchstoke, with Harry Vince-Holt, Andy Evans and Callum Page also scoring for the visiting side.Tony Meredith, Jamie Betton and Kelvin Sergeant netted for Stoke.
