NEFYN United claimed a significant scalp, when they beat higher ranked Llandudno Amateurs in a 6-4 thriller at the start of their JD Welsh Cup campaign.
An exciting first qualifying round at Cae’r Delyn swung to and fro, with Nefyn letting a two-goal lead slip, before rallying in the second half to claim victory.
Joint player-manager Carl Jones bagged a brace of goals, after 13 and 85 minutes, and singles were added by Daniel Roberts on 22, Guto Roberts on 64, Dylan Sion Jones on 70 and Tomos Jones on 87.
The Amateurs, who play a level higher in the Welsh Alliance division two, had replied through Aden Bell on 60, Scott Court from a penalty a minute later, Bell again on 65 and Michael Laughren on 82.
A depleted Blaenau Ffestiniog Amateurs meanwhile marched on with a 5-4 extra-time win at Bro Goronwy in Anglesey, despite having five players unavailable.
Bro took the lead through Ross Mark, but Alun Hughes’ equalised, and winger Sion Roberts took the lead for Blaenau. Jack Thomas equalised, however, and made it 3-2 at the interval, before completing his hat-trick to make it 4-2 to the hosts.
Blaenau finally hit back through player manager Ceri Roberts, and then right on 90 minutes the Amateurs’ captain Iwan Jones forced extra time, in which Ceri Roberts scored a dramatic late winner.
Glan Conwy booked their place with an emphatic 8-2 home win over Pentraeth.
Goals by Jamie Jones and Ben Jarvis, with a brace, gave the hosts a comfortable cushion inside 25 minutes, before Keating Hoe-Pike fired a hat-trick, and Darren Landers and Matty Sykes also netted.
Elsewhere a Calum Parry hat-trick was enough to give Llanrwst United a 3-2 win away at Gaerwen, whilst Ben Wynne and Josh Griffiths gave Mochdre Sports a 2-0 triumph away at Penmaenmawr Phoenix.
Bangor 1876 made their Welsh Cup debut, as goals from Jamie Petrie, from the penalty spot, Cameron Barry, Cian Williams and Dylan Summers Jones sealed a 4-1 win against Llandudno Athletic, who had taken the lead through Lee Stokes.
Kinmwel Bay’s journey ended with a shock 5-3 defeat at Llanfairfechan Town, who scored through Tom Croton, with a brace, Harry Croton, Iwan Jones and Ryan Lewis. The Bay responded through Matty Griffiths, with a brace, and Szbor Gyorey.Asa Thomas netted a hat-trick as Holyhead progressed with a 5-3 win at Amlwch Town, with Ryan Rees also hitting brace to round off their scoring. Ryan Rowlands twice put Amwlch ahead in the first half.Aaron Jones, Daniel Morris and Craig Owen on target for Aberffraw in their 3-1 home triumph over Llandudno Junction, whilst Gaerwen slipped to a narrow 3-2 defeat at the hands of Llanrwst United, who marched on with a hat-trick from Callum Parry, including a penalty.
Cartrefi Cymunedol Gwynedd League
Llanystumdwy notched an overdue opening win in their Gwynedd League campaign as they emerged runaway 7-2 winners against Llanerchymedd.
Aled Jones’ squad set out their stall early and were four goals clear inside the first quarter-of-an-hour. Mark Godfrey was quickest off the mark, netting two goals within seven minutes. Darren Parry scored on 10 minutes and Iwan Lloyd on 11, with Godfrey completing his hat-trick on 31 to make it 5-0.
Llanystumdwy, who had gone through their previous six matches for only one draw and five defeats, added two more goals early in the second half, both from Darren Parry on 48 and 62 minutes for his treble.
With the three points already in the bag, Llanerchymedd managed to exact some consolation, with replies from Mark Jones on 64 minutes and Shaun Pritchard from a penalty on 75 minutes.
On a day when all four away teams registered league wins, the early leaders Trearddur Bay Bulls made it six successes in a row by beating hosts Ogwen Tigers 3-2, with second half goals by Dave Webb on 54 and 88 minutes and Gwynfor Owen on 63.
The Tigers had stretched the early title front-runners, initially with the lead-taking goal by Tomos Eames on 36 minutes, followed by an own-goal on 76.
Talysarn Celts won 5-3 at Glantraeth, their goals being netted by Jac Jones on 22 minutes, Rhodri Jones on 45, Gwyn Thomas on 54 and Luke Baum on 64 and 71, with replies by Cian Evans on 46 and 85 minutes and finally Arron Rickards in injury time.
Bethesda Athletic looked to Andy Clarke for both goals that beat hosts Bontnewydd 2-0, the goals timed at 8 and 63 minutes.
