NEFYN United’s hopes of making progress in the JD Welsh Cup ended with a 2-0 home defeat to JD Cymru North side Bangor City, in front of one of the biggest crowds of the season at Cae’r Delyn.
In a game of few chances, joint player-manager Carl Jones fired a promising effort towards the Bangor target, as defences remained on top. Francesco Serafino saw his shot diverted onto the post by home keeper Ian Aikman, and Aldair Neto also crashed another effort against the crossbar.
In the second half, Aikman denied both Piero Cauterucci and Neto, and substitute Salvatore Pascarella headed against the post as City’s pressure mounted.
The deadlock was finally broken when Serafino supplied a neat ball for Pascarella to find the net from a tight angle. The hosts went in search of an equaliser, but Bangor secured their win when Yalany Baio found Pascarella, one of several Italians in their ranks, and he finished smartly for his second of the day.
Blaenau Ffestiniog bowed out of the competition as JD Cymru North visitors Buckley Town did enough to progress with a hard-earned 2-0 win at Cae Clyd.
This was believed to be the first meeting of these two clubs, and the match was played in difficult conditions, after heavy downpours of the previous 24 hours.
It took the visitors just five minutes to score as the top scorer of last season, Jake Roberts, scored his first of this season following a deft pass from Aron Williams.
Minutes later he had a good chance to score again, but with only keeper Gethin Jones to beat his shot went over the bar. he visitors dominated, but when Joe Dukes threatened the Buckley goal he saw his effort well saved by Joe McKarak.
Back came the visiting side and Keiron Moore saw his shot come back off the bar, and the home side had to defend well before Meilir Williams had one of his few chances, but he fired wide of the target.
The second half followed the same pattern, with Jones keeping his side in the tie, until the visitors doubled their lead on 70 minutes through Aron Williams. In the final minutes, sub Tom Hughes saw a fine effort hit the bar with the keeper beaten, but there was no way back.
Elsewhere in the competition, Welsh Alliance title chasers Holyhead Hotspur marched on a 4-2 win against Montgomery, courtesy of goals by Sam Ashworth on 21 and 69 minutes and Rob Jones on 65, plus an own-goal on 80. Jack Williams and Tom Evans netted for Monty, who had Darryl Jones sent off in the first half.
Nantlle Vale beat Rhydymwyn 2-0, with early goals by Aaron Hughes and Cynan Davies inside seven minutes, while Llannefydd triumphed 3-0 at Chirk AAA, where Emyr Clwyd netted on 43 and Elgan Jones from penalties on 75 and 89.
Greenfield beat Caersws 3-1, thanks to a second half scoring show that involved Connor Hughes finding the target on 58 minutes and Sam Jones on 75 and 82, with Mark Edmondson replying on 88.
Guilsfield narrowly beat a Brymbo outfit which finished the match with nine men with a 2-1 win at Clos Mytton. Adam Davies, from the penalty spot, and Callum Bromley struck for Guils, with Jamie Cummings netting for the Steelmen.
A Llyr Morris brace secured 10-man Ruthin Town a 2-1 triumph at Conwy Borough, with Craig Whelan responding, whilst Callum Bratley and Richie Foulkes both bagged hat-tricks as Flint Town United dismantled Four Crosses 9-0. Alex Titchiner, with a brace, and Andrew Brown also netted.Coedpoeth United lost 5-0 at home to Cymru North side Gresford Athletic. Jake Eyre notched a hat-trick for the Colliers, including two spot-kicks, while Nathan Williams and Jack Chaloner also found the net.
