NEFYN United, appearing in the first of three cup finals, failed to get their hands on the Gwynedd League’s Safeflue Shield, as Gwalchmai triumphed 2-1 in extra-time.

The showpiece final, staged at Porthmadog’s Traeth ground in front of a sizeable crowd, was goalless in the opening half, as the respective defences imposed stranglehold grips on the opposing attackers.

Rhys Williams at right-back and Llyr Williams in central defence were most effective for Nefyn as few threatening shots got through to trouble keeper Dafydd Jones.

Clear-cut scoring chances were again in short supply at both ends in the second period but then, just short of the hour, Nefyn were dealt a body-blow by Gwalchmai’s lead-taking goal from Craig Evans.

Defeat seemed to be staring Chris Jones’ men in the face until, right on 90 minutes, Mark Dunn rescued the situation temporarily with a last-gasp equaliser from close range, to take the tie into extra-time.

Seven minutes of the additional half-hour remained when the Anglesey side snapped up what proved up to be the Shield winner from Corey Sinnott, and Nefyn’s woes were compounded as sub Iwan Jones was sent off by referee Rhodri ap Dafydd.

Nefyn, who had gone into action with a decent eight-match run for six wins, one draw and just one defeat, have yet to overcome Gwalchmai this season in three meetings, yielding one draw and two losses.

The Cae’r Delyn club can still look forward to two other cup finals to come, in the Bob Owen Memorial Shield against Bro Goronwy at Caernarfon on Friday, 18 May, and in the North Wales Coast Junior Cup against as yet unknown opponents.
