NEFYN United, who appeared in three cup finals last season, including capturing the North Wales Coast Junior Cup, are proving to be knockout specialists once again this season.

Chris Jones’ side swept into their second Gwynedd League semi-final - in this instance the Bob Owen Memorial Shield - by beating second round opponents Gwalchmai 4-2 at rain-swept Cae’r Delyn last weekend.

Beaten finalists to Bro Goronwy in the last campaign, Nefyn fell into arrears just four minutes into this tie, as Gwalchmai’s Corey Sinnott netted with a 25-yard free-kick that bounced over keeper Kieran Williams.

The hosts were back on level terms on 29 minutes, thanks to Daniel Roberts, who used his head to make good use of a cross from the right, and the score became 2-1 with Guto Roberts’ 10-yarder around the half-hour mark.

Gwalchmai, who were reduced to 10 men on 40 minutes by the red card dismissal of John Jones for a bad tackle on Nefyn’s Roberts, then found themselves further in arrears five minutes into the second period, because of Llion Bryn Jones’ strike.

Although the visitors’ Gwion Thomas clawed one back on 72 minutes, the convincing home win was clinched at 4-2 by an own-goal off Gwalchmai’s Paul Thomas on 80 minutes and that enabled Nefyn to extend their unbeaten run to five matches.

The Gwynedd League Cup losing finalists last season, Bro Goronwy, meanwhile progressed to the semi-finals again as 3-2 winners at Talysarn Celts in their second round match.

The Moelfre side prevailed thanks to goals by Andy Williams, Connor Jones and Rob Tiesteel against strikes from Jac Jones and Thomas Usher.

In the Gwynedd League, Glantraeth moved up to third-from-top in the table, chasing leaders Menai Bridge Tigers and second-placed Gwalchmai, by overtaking Llangoed when beating them 3-2 at the Bodorgan ground.

Llangoed led at half-time, courtesy of Matty Owen’s goal on 20 minutes, but Glantraeth equalised and then went 2-1 up by means of an Andy Clarke brace on 58 and 63 minutes.

Llangoed bounced back quickly, with Jay Finter levelling the scores on 70 minutes, but the home team had the final say when Tim Evans produced the 87th minute decider.

Bontnewydd versus Mynydd Tigers was postponed, because of a waterlogged pitch, and Waunfawr failed to raise a team to travel to Menai Bridge.
