SION Parry’s first senior goal for Porthmadog ended the club’s lean spell of five straight Cymru Alliance defeats, with a superb 1-0 win over high-flying Holywell.
On as a substitute for the injured James Papirnyk, Parry put Julian Williams in possession, and the striker then burst forward to take the return pass and direct a half-volley from eight yards into the net.
The Wellmen had arrived as the second-from-top team, with the best goals’ tally in the league, and they proceeded to dominate the play, without seriously testing home goalkeeper Richard Harvey. In the first half, which was played out mostly in midfield, the visiting side hinted at scoring when Steve Thomas fired wide, as did Josh Roberts with a free-kick.
Porth’s initiatives were limited to Julian Williams having a low drive comfortably held by the visitors’ Mike Platt, and Stuart Rogers being denied by a goal-line block by visiting defender Dafydd Griffiths.
The second half pattern was similar, with Porth obliged to back-pedal a great deal, and Holywell’s Steve Lewis headed over and fired wide of the home target, and Roberts twice fired outside the post.
It was out of the blue and against the run of play that Parry finally stole the lead - and then five minutes from the end referee Mike Gray pointed to the penalty spot, following a handball by Griffiths.
Ceri James’ attempt to double the home team’s lead failed, however, as the keeper dived to his right for an acrobatic save.
