RYAN Edwards fired a hat-trick as Penparcau progressed to the second round of the ER Jenkins Mid Wales Cup with a solid 5-2 win over derby rivals Borth United last weekend.

Lee Jones and Michael Gornall also got on the scoresheet as the MMP Mid Wales League division two leaders marched on, despite replies from Gethin ap Dafydd and Ryan Davies for a battling Borth.

The two teams looked evenly matched as the first half progressed at a blustery Min-y-Ddol, but it was the home side who took the lead on 25 minutes when Liam Lewis squared the ball into Lee Jones’ path for a tap in at the far post.

Borth hit back to equalise within a minute when Gethin ap Dafydd scored a superb rasping shot into the top corner from 25 yards to make it 1-1 at half time.

With the wind at their backs as the second half got underway, Arky pushed forward with purpose and Borth keeper Lee Herbert made two fine finger-tip saves to deny Michael Gornall and Mark Gornall.

The hosts took firm control of the tie midway through the half as Michael Gornall restored their lead with a tap in, and the prolific Ryan Edwards further extended their lead from the penalty spot and another neat finish from close range.

Borth responded and Ryan Davies reduced the deficit by scoring from the penalty spot - but as the match reached its conclusion Ryan Edwards scored the Arky’s fifth goal with a deft finish, to complete his well deserved hat-trick.

Waterloo Rovers are through to the third round of the competition after they saw off Dolgellau with a solid 3-1 win, with Tom Ellis scoring two penalties.

Nick Roberts also scored for the Welshpool hosts as they marched on into the semi-final stage, despite Dolgellau finding the net through Owain Williams.

The quarter-final matches between Machynlleth and Forden United at Cae Glas, and Rhayader Town and Newbridge at Y Weirglodd were both postponed on Friday night due to waterlogged pitches.

With no league matches scheduled for this weekend, Penparcau will go into the Christmas period three points clear at the top of the division two table, with a game in hand on second-placed Newbridge.

With a perfect 10 wins from 10 league games this season, Penparcau are hoping to keep their winning run going on Boxing Day with a trip to face Dyffryn Banw.
