RECENT addition Craig Williams proved an instant hit as Penrhyncoch got their first points on the board in the Huws Gray Cymru Alliance with a terrific 3-2 victory away against Holywell Town.

After their opening day defeat to Porthmadog, it was the perfect response from the Roosters, who also went on to beat Guilsfield 3-0 on Tuesday night.

It was former Aberystwyth Town player Williams, a recent arrival from Welsh Premier club Newtown, who was soon in the thick of things when making his mark with the opening goal at Holywell.

Defender Jon Foligno conceded an unfortunate own goal, but he made amends with a goal at the other end, and although Matty Harvey equalised, Liam Doherty grabbed a priceless winner with 10 minutes remaining to cap a terrific afternoon for the Roosters.

“We had a few players missing, but the lads were fantastic and they all put in a huge performance,” said boss Gari Lewis. “Craig came in and scored, and he knows he could have had two as he missed an easier chance. He’s not as quick as he used to be, but he is still a wonderful talent, and has a great touch.

“I don’t want to single anyone out from such a brilliant team effort, but for me Sherbs (Luke Sherbon) was probably the man of the match for putting in such a big performance in the middle of the park.

“It was a great win. We would have taken a draw before the game, so to come away with three points is massive for us. We were in the ascendancy and could have won by a couple of clear goals.”

Lewis also praised the impact made by 18-year-old Tom Evans, since joining from Aberystwyth.

“He has played two games now and has really taken to Cymru Alliance football,” Lewis commented. “He has a great attitude, and is a pleasure to work with.”

Penrhyn were looking for their first points, but their selection was disrupted by the absence of Rob Murfet and Jonathan Evans due to family commitments.

They started with purpose, however, with Doherty just failing to convert a rebound, after a Sherbon shot had been spilled, while Williams was denied by a fine save from keeper Andy Metcalfe.

They were ahead on 21 minutes when Liam James sent over a superb cross from the right and the incoming Williams crashed home his first goal for the club. Holywell hit back two minutes later as a corner was driven into the goalmouth and was deflected into the net off Foligno.

Penrhyn were soon back in front on 25 minutes as Foligno produced a neat finish at the other end, from a Carwyn Jones cross. They were pegged back a second time soon after, however, as Matty Harvey’s cross found the bottom corner of the net.

The visitors had their chances, before going ahead again 10 minutes from time as substitute Elian Evans forced his way to the byline before pulling the ball back for Doherty to poke the ball home.Penrhyncoch maintained made it back-to-back wins on Tuesday night as they gained all three points in their mid-Wales derby, with a 3-0 win over Guilsfield.A Craig Williams goal had them ahead the break, with Josh Shaw doubling their lead at the start of the second half, and Williams netting his second of the night and Penrhyn’s third. The Roosters embark on an a challenging trip to Rhyl on Friday night.
