PENRHYNCOCH Ladies staged a stunning comeback from 5-1 down to deny Aberystwyth University Ladies the Ceredigion double as they lifted the League Cup in a thrilling final at Borth on Thursday evening.

Cat Davies led the fightback with four goals and Hannah Davies and Steph Lucas also scored, before skipper Debbie Hamer netted a superb winner to ensure that she lifted the trophy after a pulsating win.

On a glorious sunny evening at Uppingham Fields, the students were attempting to cap a fine season by adding the Ceredigion Ladies League Cup to the league title they had won the previous weekend.

They faced a stern test, however, against a Penrhyn side that had been pipped to the league honours in a very tight finish.

The league champions made a great start as Annie Davies opened their account after four minutes, but Penrhyn hit back when Cat Davies netted with a cool finish.

Penrhyn, however, were stunned as the lively students stormed into a commanding 5-1 lead, courtesy of two goals from Emily Bradley, a superb 30 yard chip from Holly Marshall, and a Sam Lewtas effort.

Again Penrhyn fought back, with Cat Davies scoring twice more to complete a well-taken first half hat-trick, to give her side a lifeline at the interval at 5-3 down.

Paul Hill and Debbie Jenkins’ side came out for the second half with plenty of belief and were further lifted when Hannah Davies quickly reduced the deficit to 5-4.

Holly Marshall restored Uni’s two goal lead with a fine finish, but the goals kept coming at the other end as Penrhyn scored twice more in two minutes, through Davies and Steph Lucas, to make the game all square at 6-6 going into the closing stages.

With both teams pushing for the winner, it was Penrhyn skipper Debbie Hamer who chipped the keeper from 30 yards out for a dramatic winner in the 83rd minute.
