PENRHYNCOCH manager Gari Lewis is looking for one last push to secure the double when they take on Hay St Mary’s in the Spar Mid Wales League Cup Final at Llanidloes on Saturday (ko 2.30pm).

The Roosters stayed on course for a league and cup double after reaching the final with a 2-0 victory over Carno at Llanidloes last Friday evening.

Second half goals by Arron Lemon and Jonathan Evans took the champions through to Saturday’s final meeting with Hay St Mary’s, as they look to defend the trophy they won 12 months ago.

After a goalless first half, the crucial breakthrough came 10 minutes into the second period when Jon Foligno headed across goal for Lemon to nod home.

Carno then threw men forward in a bid to retrieve the tie, but Penrhyn sealed the win late on when Evans pounced to coolly slot home.

Player boss Gari Lewis is now looking for his side to secure the silverware, with Hay standing in the way of a memorable league and cup double.

“It was great winning the championship, now we’ve got one more battle left,” said Lewis. “I’ve been proud of what we have already achieved, and if we can win the league cup it would cap off a marvellous season.

“Hay will be a tough game, they are probably the best footballing team we have faced. They play the game in the right way, and they have got some quality players.

“But this is a game everyone is looking forward to. It’s a day out for the supporters, and we always enjoy playing at Llanidloes, which is a fantastic club.”

Lewis admitted his side had to work hard before securing their victory against Carno, which was also played at Victoria Avenue.

“There was nothing much in it, but in the end we managed to get the right result, like we have in a lot of games this season,” Lewis added. “It was a solid, professional display.

“The first half was cagey and tense, with the two teams feeling each other out, and at half time we felt the first goal would be crucial.

“It was a case of waiting for a mistake, or taking your chance from a set-piece.”

Lewis faced some tricky selection decisions for their semi-final, with Josh Shaw and Mattie Daves both back in contention after missing the team’s last league game due to work.

Vice captain Shaw got the nod to return to the line-up, but Davies was on the bench as the Roosters made one change to the side that defeated Hay in the league.

“It was an amazingly hard decision over who to leave out, such is the strength of our squad,” added Lewis.

One player who will not to be involved in the final will be Matt Mousley, who will be unavailable - the second final he has missed after also being ruled out last season.

Penrhyn knew they would have their work cut out against a Carno side who have proved a consistent force this season to finish third in the Spar League table, while also reaching the Central Wales Cup final.

A hard fought affair saw few chances in the first half, with Evans shooting over, whilst at the other end Gregg Brown fired straight at assured keeper Lee Jenkins.

The second half sprang to life after the Roosters got their noses in front through Lemon, with Carno then ringing the changes as they pushed on for a leveller.

Adam Williams shot just over and Jenkins pulled off a terrific save from point blank range by Andrew Evans.

Penrhyn managed to hold on with Evans’ neatly taken goal in the last minute, following a stray clearance settling the issue as they moved one step closer to another second piece of silverware.

In the final, Penrhyn will meet Hay St Mary’s who progressed with a 4-2 penalty shoot-out win against Knighton Town, after the tie at Presteigne had finished 2-2 following extra time.

The final sees the Roosters face the side they defeated so dramatically 1-0 through Owain James’ late goal to clinch the title, and promotion to the Cymru Alliance.Hay St Mary's boss Gareth Jenkins said: "I’m expecting a tough final against the league champions. We pushed them all the way a few weeks ago until conceding in the last couple of minutes."We also drew 4-4 in our home fixture in a thrilling game when Penrhyn equalised in the 96th minute."We put in a dogged performance to get to the final by beating Knighton Town, and we are in form and full of confidence. Hopefully we can put in another big team effort and win the league cup for the first ever time."
