PENRHYNCOCH took their chances to move up to eighth position in the JD Cymru North as goals from Jonathan Evans, Steffan Davies and Guto Huws sealed a 3-1 win at lowly Corwen.

Gari Lewis’ side were worked hard by a very determined home side, but after their midweek Central Wales Cup win at Machynlleth, the Roosters deservedly picked up their first league points of 2020.

With a strong wind at their backs in the opening half, Penrhyn went close to opening the scoring when Jonathan Evans’ header forced a low save out of home keeper Dylan Jones, whilst Jack Rimmer also hit the side-netting with a free-kick.

They made the breakthrough on 20 minutes when Evans got away from his marker to meet a Mathew Pemberthy corner at the near post, and his header looped into the far corner of the net.

Corwen’s Tom Williams tested keeper Leigh Jenkins at the other end, and Penrhyn had to clear their lines from a goalmouth scramble - but on half an hour, Evans went close to doubling the Roosters’ lead when his header struck the post.

The hosts had a great chance to level the scores before the break when Joe Williams got on the end of a Tom Williams cross, but he could only poke his header narrowly wide from within the six yard box.

A few minutes into the second half, Tom Williams played a cross in to Dale Davies, whose header went just wide - but Penrhyn doubled their lead on 57 minutes.

A free kick was played into the penalty box, and Steffan Davies ghosted away from his marker to slot home with a cool finish to put the visitors in firm control.

The home side had a penalty shout when Nathan Davies appeared to be fouled by keeper Jenkins, but referee Conor Charlton-Fleming waved away their claims.

Penrhyn remained on top, however, and they made sure of the points on 71 minutes as new signing Guto Huws, on his return to the club from Aberaeron, curled the ball into the far corner of the net.

The hosts looked for a way back into the game as Tom Williams played the ball into the box, and Dale Davies could only send his diving header over the crossbar.

With 10 minutes to play, they got their reward as Eilir Edwards played a corner towards goal, which keeper Jenkins attempted to punch clear, but could only help it on its way into the back of the net.

Corwen pushed on in the closing stages with a series of corners, but they were unable to set up a grandstand finish as Penrhyn held firm for a ninth league win.

Elsewhere in the JD Cymru North, nine-man Prestatyn Town edged a 1-0 win over Conwy Borough to maintain their nine-point lead at the top of the league table.

Danny Davies netted a 66th minute winner, but the league leaders had to overcome Alex Jones and Jack Higgins being sent off in the last 20 minutes of the game.

Flint beat Bangor City 1-0, courtesy of Dom McHugh’s first half goal, whilst Rhyl won 2-1 at Ruthin, with first half goals from Danny Sullivan and Mason Blackwell-Jones, with Tom Dyer replying.

Josh Jones grabbed the only goal as Buckley Town edged a 1-0 success at Llandudno, whilst second half goals from Jake Eyre, new signing Dan Holland and Jordan MacCarter earned Gresford a 3-0 win at basement battlers Llanfair United.

Porthmadog drew 1-1 away at Llangefni on Friday, with a first half penalty by Josh Davies for the visitors being cancelled out by Jordan Murphy’s equaliser late on.
