LLANIDLOES Town boss Hugh Clarke admitted his side were left devastated after leaders Welshpool Town grabbed a last-gasp leveller in an entertaining Spar Mid Wales League division one clash at Victoria Avenue.
The third-placed Daffs looked to have a precious win in the bag, before Adam Davies struck his second goal five minutes into injury time to earn Pool a 2-2 draw.
It was a frustrating finish for Llani, who had twice led through new signing Peter Rees and Ryan Biggs, only to be pegged back twice.
The draw means that Llanidloes remain eight points behind Pool with three games in hand, and are six points adrift of second-placed Llanrhaeadr, who have played two less games.
Manager Hugh Clarke said his side could take plenty of heart from the display as they prepare to host Churchstoke on Wednesday, before visiting Kerry on Saturday.
“The lads were devastated when they came off, it was as if they had lost 10-0,” said Clarke. “We were good right through the team, and the better team for long periods.
“We had chances to have won it, their keeper made some good saves, but a draw is not the end of the world.
“We’ve got eight games left, and need to keep picking up points and see where it takes us. We’ve got key players out, but the good thing is that those who came in did not weaken the side.”
Debutant Rees, signed from Carno in midweek, looked sharp, and he sounded a warning when striking the bar, before taking the lead four minutes before half time when finishing off a cross from Ryan Biggs.
Pool launched a swift riposte to equalise just before the break, with Davies scoring with a deflected strike from 20 yards out, after being teed up by a quickly taken free kick by Ian Probert.
Llani regained lead on the hour when Biggs drove a terrific 25-yard volley into the bottom corner, and they were denied a third when keeper Dave Littleford made a superb save from Rees.
The hosts still looked to have done enough to earn the spoils, but Welshpool snatched a crucial point five minutes into injury time.
Former Daffs wing back Steve Jones broke down the right and, despite being denied by a goalline clearance, Pool’s player of the month Davies was on hand to sweep home the loose ball.
Second-placed Llanrhaeadr meanwhile failed to make up ground on the leaders as they slipped to a 3-2 loss away at Aberaeron.
Trailing 2-0 at the interval, Llanrhaeadr hit back through Khyam Wyton and Marc Griffiths, but goals from Mattie Davies, with a brace, and Mathew Clarke ultimately sealed the points.
Bow Street eased to a 3-0 win at Machylleth to keep in touch with the leading pack, and with games in hand.
Goals from Mark Gornall, from the penalty spot, Callum Ferreira and Tom Williams took the spoils against Mach’s basement battlers.
Borth United’s depleted squad went down 5-1 at Carno, where two goals from Luke Evans and an Andy Evans strike had earned the hosts a 3-0 lead at the break.
Further goals from Geraint Jones and Scott Williams sealed the points for the Greens, either side of a reply goal from Ryan Edwards
After beating Knighton 2-1 in their Central Wales Cup tie, Llanfair were victors again by the same margin.
Alun Hughes pounced on a goalkeeping error to put Llanfair ahead, and a good team move resulted in Paul Griffiths squaring the ball across the six yard box, and a Knighton defender putting the ball into his own net.
Llanfair’s Alun Hughes was sent off for a second bookable offence, and minutes later, Knighton pulled a goal back, but despite having Dan Kenyon stretchered off with a nasty looking injury, Llanfair held on to win.
Radnor Valley, with no less than nine regulars missing, registered a 5-1 win over Kerry, with Jack Williams the star of the show with two goals and two assists.
Elliot Morris also netted a brace, along with a goal from Chris Price, whilst Ben Davies replied for Kerry, who only had a squad of 10 up until 10pm on Friday.
Two goals from Joe Haycock and a screamer from Kieran Mulloch earned Churchstoke a 3-1 win over Llandrindod Wells, who scored through Ben Jones.
Berriew’s unbeaten run ended with a 3-2 defeat at home against Tywyn/Bryncrug, who took the spoils courtesy of Aston Heath, with a brace, and Mark Edmondson. Josh Morgan and Rhys Stephens replied.
