SIX Porthmadog players got onto the scoresheet as Craig Papirnyk’s free-scoring side hammered FC Queen’s Park 9-2, in what was their most emphatic win in 15 seasons.

The last time they scored as many goals in one match was in April 2003, when Porthmadog ran up a 9-0 tally against Cemaes Bay on their ground.

For some time on Saturday, however, there was little hint of another goal blitz, as the score stood modestly at 2-1 at half-time – before Porthmadog netted four goals in just 20 minutes.

Within the first six minutes, Craig Papirnyk’s team had set up four clear chances, two each for Cai Jones and Joe Chaplin, but both miscued when they should have found the target.

Queen’s Park, who had arrived with just one win to their credit, following promotion from the Wrexham Area League - remarkably, against title contenders Airbus Broughton 4-0 in their second match - looked promising when going forward for a while.

Their goalkeeper Callum Thurnham was beaten for the first time on 11 minutes, however, by Cai Jones, with a low 10 yard strike, after latching on to Iddon Price’s neat through ball.

Chaplin then doubled the lead for the hosts on 15 minutes, netting from around the same distance, after Sion Bradley had been the instigator of the incisive move along the left wing.

Queen’s Park improved their prospects seemingly with the 34th minute reply goal by Barry Torrance, when rounding off a breakaway down their left by cutting inside and sweeping an 18-yarder past Richard Harvey.

With the score interestingly poised at 2-1 for the start of the second half, Porth suddenly went on the rampage.

Steve Bratt, who had replaced the injured Tom Taylor in the first half, began the spree on 50 minutes, following a corner, and Cai Jones then scored off a post on 54. Bradley netted from 12 yards on 55 and Jones got another on 56, as the tally leapt to 6-1.

Queen’s Park sneaked upfield for Edgar Lima to provide his beleaguered side’s second reply on 64 minutes, but there was yet more to come from Porthmadog at the other end.

Chaplin prodded home from close range on 69 minutes, sub Meilir Williams applied a tap-in on 71 and sub Leon Doran provided the ninth and last goal a minute into stoppage-time.

Porthmadog could have had even more goals, as Chaplin had a penalty saved and other attempts brought reactions by the Queen’s Park keeper, using his legs at times, as well as some goal-line blocks and scrambles.
