PORTHMADOG’s superior possession counted for little in the end as visitors Guilsfield secured the Cymru Alliance points with a stoppage time third goal.

Guilsfield had survived an initial home bombardment to score two quick-fire goals around the half-hour, and although Porthmadog trimmed the arrears on 72 minutes through Griff John Williams, further home pressure went unrewarded.

It was a cruel blow for the home team, when Guilsfield burst clear to add the third goal with the last kick of the match.

Porthmadog had started brightly and a corner by Iwan Lewis gave Asa Hamilton a heading chance that he steered against the bar, and when Cai Jones followed up the bar again came to the visitors’ rescue.

A free-kick from 25 yards by Lewis soon after forced Guilsfield’s Dave Littleford into a fine save and, when Cai Jones latched on to Hamilton’s right-wing cross, the visiting goalkeeper was tested again.

Hamilton also powered in a header from 12 yards that Littleford did well to divert over the bar - but double trouble then hit Porthmadog just after the half-hour mark.

Andrew Ford seized on to a misdirected clearance from a free-kick to score from 25 yards on 32 minutes, and five minutes later Jake Cook swept over a low cross for Lee Andrews to apply a close range finish.

The second half lacked the urgency of the earlier play, for a spell at least, until Porthmadog clawed back the arrears with 18 minutes left, thanks to Griff Williams, who directed a 12-yards’ header over the static Littleford following a free-kick.

The hosts had all to play for in the game’s closing stages and surged forward but, apart from Julian Williams having a shot blocked at six yards’ range, they failed to threaten Guilsfield’s keeper again.

Jamie McDaid miscued from a hopeful position, but Guilsfield had the final say, deep into stoppage time, when Cook’s 15-yard strike had the beating of the home side’s Richard Harvey to seal the points.
