RIAN Devlin netted his 22nd goal of the season in the Spar Mid Wales League division two as Aberystwyth University kept the pressure on the leaders with a 3-0 home victory over Dyffryn Banw.

After their disappointing 4-1 home loss to Radnor Valley, it was a good comeback for the students, who remain neck and neck at the top of the table with Berriew, who are still top on goal difference after a 7-0 romp against Bont.

After a goalless first half, the University turned the screw and they eventually went a goal in front after a brilliant free kick from Carwyn Eckley found its way into the back of the net via the crossbar.

A few minutes later, the lead was doubled as top scorer Devlin found himself with time to pick his spot in the box. His goal-bound effort took a slight nick off the defender to take it out of the goalkeeper’s reach and into the bottom corner.

It was 3-0 not long later when the away side were unable to clear their lines and Nathan Lang slotted through the keeper’s legs, to send the students into raptures.

On Sunday, however, the students missed a chance of going clear at the top as they were beaten 3-2 at Builth Wells.

Devlin made the most of a defensive mishap in the Builth back-line to tee up Shaun Roberts to score the opening goal.

Builth, however, replied when Bradley Rollinson cut inside and hit a 25 yard screamer over keeper Alex Westbury.

The Uni restored their lead when Matty Hunton, playing back out wide, sent in an inch-perfect cross to Sam Chapman, who directed the ball back across the goal for his first goal for the Aber students.

Builth struck again just before half-time when Gethin Jarman went clear, before poking the ball beyond keeper Westbury.

Shortly after half-time Builth netted what proved to be the winner when Josh Price made the most of Sam Tobin’s swiped clearance to smash the ball home - and they held firmly onto the points.

Aberystwyth University will go again on Wednesday in their British Universities’ title pursuit in Division Four West B, at home against Cardiff Met Fourths.

The students then turn their attentions to the Central Wales Senior Challenge Cup, when they face Hay St Mary’s in their fourth round tie at Vicarage Fields on Saturday.
