NEFYN United got 2018 off to a promising start, after a month-long lay-off, by securing Gwynedd League winners’ points over visitors Menai Bridge Tigers, thanks to a solitary goal from Iwan Roberts.

The Cae’r Delyn faithful had hardly settled for the second half, when Roberts worked into space at an angle on the left and whipped over a cross-cum-shot that ended up in the Bridge net on 46 minutes.

Chris Jones’ team, now fourth-from-top, had pulled off a 2-0 result when appearing at Menai Bridge in late August and this success in the home return completed a second league double of the campaign.

The win was hard-earned, with play switching from end-to-end, and late on their lead survived thanks to keeper Dafydd Jones, who made two superb saves.

In the battle for the league championship, two of the main contenders stepped up their title bids with convincing wins.

Bro Goronwy were 5-1 winners against Waunfawr, courtesy of a hat-trick by Taylor Jones, who scored on 28 minutes, 64 from a penalty and 67, and singles by Andy Williams on 75 and Carwyn Williams on 87 minutes. Waunfawr’s Meurig Parry replied on 54 minutes with what was the equaliser at 1-1 at that stage.

Bontnewydd meanwhile finished 4-0 ahead of Beaumaris Town, and their goals were hit by Gari Owen on 24 minutes, Aled Steele on 38 and, right at the end, Ian Pleming and Phil McGrath on 89 and 90.

Bro Goronwy’s match with Waunfawr had originally been planned as a Meditel Cup second round tie, to be played at Waunfawr, but because the pitch there was waterlogged, alternative arrangements were made for the teams to meet in a league fixture at the Moelfre ground.

• Three more Gwynedd clubs have booked passage into the North Wales Coast Junior Cup’s last 16 by winning delayed second round ties that had been rained off before Christmas. They included Gwalchmai, Holyhead Town and Llangoed - but there were also cup knockouts for both Llanllyfni and Talysarn Celts.

Holyhead Town won in style 5-3 in a rip-roaring contest at Llanfairfechan Town, whilst Llangoed swamped Denbigh Development 6-1 and Gwalchmai made it 3-0 at Abergele. Talysarn Celts’ exit came about in a 3-2 home defeat to Rhyl Rovers, while Llanllyfni also lost on their own ground to Rhyl Youth by a 5-2 margin.

Previously, at the first attempt, four clubs from Gwynedd swept into round three, including Llanystumdwy, Waunfawr, Bontnewydd and Bro Goronwy.

The pick of the ties in the third round is Nefyn United versus Llanystumdwy, both previous winners, in 2000 and 2005.

The other ties are Caergybi v Bontnewydd, Gwalchmai v Bro Goronwy, Llandudno Amateurs v Llansannan, Llangoed v Holyhead Town, Rhyl Rovers v Valley, Rhyl Youth v Henllan or Old Colwyn, Waunfawr v Rhuddlan Town. Matches to be played on Saturday, 17 February.
