AFTER four postponements Blaenau Amateurs’ Mawddach Challenge Cup first round tie eventually got under way at Bala’s Maes Tegid ground and as expected division one side Llanrwst United made through with a 6-1 win.

Llanrwst went 1-0 up in the 17th minute when Elliot Llewelyn intercepted a poor pass out the back from right back Emlyn Jennings and found Mez Knight, who coolly slotted home under the onrushing goalkeeper Gethin Jones.

Llanrwst captain Gwyn Jones then saw his acrobatic volley well saved, and top scorer Mike Lundstram saw his header go just over from six yards.

A minute later, Morgan Owen sent Llewelyn through, but Gethin Jones kept Blaenau in the game with his save.

A good move from Blaenau centre midfielders Iwan Griffiths and former Llanrwst player Iwan Jones nearly saw Blaenau equalise, but Scott Hall made a fabulous tackle to deny Kieron Ellis.

In the opening minutes of the second half, Mez Knight doubled the Rwsters lead, after Owen and Hall had combined down the right side of the pitch.

In the next seven minutes, Lundstrum scored his 14th and 15th goals of the season, including a rebound from a penalty that was well saved by Jones.

Sam Roberts then scored his first goal for his home town club with a sweetly struck shot from just inside the area and Callum Parry was also on the scoresheet, as he beat his defender before smashing it into the top corner.

Blaenau’s Kieron Ellis scored what proved to be a consolation goal, but the Rwsters emerged convincing winners.

Pwllheli missed out on glory as they were beaten 2-1 at St Asaph City in a second round tie that was closely contested right up to the final whistle.

Barry Evans’ men thought they had equalised in added time at the end when Mark Jones fired into the home net, only for the offside flag to be raised.

St Asaph landed the first blow, with a goal by Simon Fawcett on 10 minutes, after which the respective defences tightened up and dominated, limiting the number of chances at both ends.

Sion Davies doubled the lead on 76 minutes, but Pwllheli then hit back with a strike by Toby Foskett on 83 minutes, for the 17 year old’s first goal for the club, as they raised the tempo.

Although coping without the injured Adam Hall and the unavailable Llion Bryn Jones, Pwllheli piled on the late pressure, but they were left frustrated.

Nantlle Vale were meanwhile beaten 6-2 at Prestatyn Sports in extra-time, after the teams had been balanced at 2-2.

The Penygroes visitors scored goals through Dan Evans on 19 minutes and Liam Robinson on 80, whereas hosts Prestatyn had as their scorers, James Harper on 39 and Miles Jones on 45.

In extra-time, the home team netted four goals in eight minutes, from Andrea Alvarado on 101 and 112, Jack McDougall on 117 and Ian Griffiths on 119.

Division one title contenders Llangefni Town were beaten 2-0 at Llannefydd, with goals by Sam Jones on 30 minutes and an Owain Roberts penalty on 32.

Another cup upset saw league leaders Conwy Borough lose 2-1 to Llandudno Albion, who countered Cory Williams’s 20th minute opener for the Musselmen, with late winning replies by Joe Lloyd on 80 and Daniel Evans on 90 minutes.

In delayed first round ties, Felinheli won 5-1 at Llanfairpwll, courtesy of doubles by Carwyn Dafydd and Chris Brown and one goal by Daniel Hughes, while Pentraeth won 2-1 at Bodedern Athletic in extra-time, through Danny Camilleri on 22 and 118 minutes.
