ABERYSTWYTH Town’s winning run came to an abrupt end as they fell to a resounding 5-1 defeat at the hands of Connah’s Quay Nomads on a bitterly cold Friday evening at the Deeside Stadium.
The Seasiders found themselves trailing when Michael Wilde nodded the hosts ahead after just seven minutes, but John Owen levelled for Aber on 15 minutes.
Soon after, however, the hosts again went ahead through Michael Bakare on 17 minutes, and former TNS striker Wilde made it 3-1 just before the interval.
Aber’s gruelling journey ended on a real low as further goals from Kai Edwards on 70 minutes and Melford Simpson on 90 completed the scoring for the Nomads.
After Aber’s players and supporters had struggled to make it to Deeside due to the adverse weather conditions, the delayed kick-off had seemed to affect their side.
The hosts earned a series of early corners thanks to tricky wing play by Bakare, and on seven minutes they made the breakthrough as Wilde headed the ball onto the underside of the crossbar from Bakare’s cross, and it came down over the line.
Aber responded well as Craig Hobson almost found a way through to goal after a neat turn, and Ryan Wade forced a couple of dangerous set-piece opportunities.
Then, on 15 minutes, John Owen latched on to an inch-perfect through ball by Malcolm Melvin, before slotting the ball past home keeper John Danby into the top corner of the net for an equalising goal.
The joy of the hardened away supporters’ lasted just 90 seconds, as Bakare cut inside onto his right foot before curling a superb effort beyond Chris Mullock and into the far corner of the net from 25 yards.
The Nomads continued to press and unsettle Aber’s rhythm on what was a difficult playing surface, and almost extended their lead when right back Sean Smith hit the crossbar with an audacious effort.
Despite being on the back-foot, Aber continued to create openings as Hobson sent a shot just wide, and Declan Walker forced a fine save with a long-range effort.
On the stroke of half-time, however, the Nomads landed another body blow as Wilde again rose highest to meet Matty Owen’s left footed corner to make it 3-1.
It was a real sucker punch for Aber before going in at the break, but the Seasiders started the second half with purpose.
Hobson earned a couple of free kicks in dangerous positions and Ashley Young also sent a dangerous long throw into the penalty area, which came to no avail.
Declan Walker tried his luck with a long-range free kick, which clipped the wall and sailed over the bar, and Hobson also saw a left-footed volley whistle just wide.
At the other end Mike Pearson had a 20 yard effort saved, and then Callum Morris ran into the box and went down, but his penalty appeals were waved away.
As the half went on the Nomads took more control and exciting attacking play yielded a fourth goal from Kai Edwards.
After Jay Owen sent a well placed high pass to Matty Owen, which beat the offside trap, he was able to square the ball to Edwards who slotted into an open net.
The Seasiders looked deflated, and made a couple of substitutions to try and find some form of consolation, as Luke Borrelli and Geoff Kellaway entered the fray.
The hosts managed the game well, however, and on 90 minutes, they rubbed more salt into Aber’s wound as Callum Morris crossed the ball for substitute Melford Simpson to tap in from close range.
