ABERYSTWYTH Town boss Neville Powell is looking for his side to build on an encouraging 2-0 win over Caersws when his side return to Welsh Premier League action against Cardiff Met at Park Avenue this Saturday (ko 2.30pm).

The Seasiders recovered from back-to-back defeats to Llandudno and Cefn Druids to reach the last 16 of the Nathaniel MG League Cup with a hard-fought win over the Bluebirds.

With forwards John Owen, Luke Borrelli and Craig Hobson all injured, Powell selected a side almost identical to that which had started at Cefn Druids four days earlier, and goals from Ashley Young on 22 minutes and substitute Jack Rimmer on 75 proved to be decisive last Tuesday.

“We are pleased to be in the next round,” said the Seasiders’ manager.

“It was always going to be a tough battle in a local derby, especially after getting beat the previous weekend, but the lads have put a shift in and it was a good, disciplined performance.

“To be honest, we were down to the bare bones, with a few injuries, so it was nice to get the win, and the lads can look forward to playing Cardiff Met after a 10 day break from action.”

He added: “We were tighter all over the park, it was important that we came here and didn’t concede, and we could have had a few more at the other end, if we’d been more clinical.

“We were missing three players, and Jonny Spittle limped off, but it is vitally important that we get those four players back, and we’ll do everything we can to make sure that they are.

“Ashley Young scored, and he is good for one or two goals, and Jack Rimmer came on and scored a good finish at the right time in the game.

“We missed a few chances before that, but at 1-0 Caersws were still in it.

“It’s important we do well in every cup competition, we are pleased to have got through this round, and can look forward to training on Tuesday.”Malcolm Melvin is sidelined with a cheekbone injury, but the latest reports from Park Avenue are that Aber's injury crisis up front has now passed.Powell is looking for his side to get their Welsh Premier campaign on track this weekend, having picked up just one point from three league matches - in their first game at Barry.

Cardiff Met have meanwhile registered good league wins over Cefn Druids and Bangor City, before a narrow defeat at Bala Town, and they came through for a cup win at Goytre.

• The draw for the second round of the Nathaniel MG Cup will see Aber host Cymru Alliance side Airbus UK, who had knocked out Cefn Druids.

Full draw: Newtown v Holywell Town; Connah’s Quay Nomads v Bangor City; Flint Town v The New Saints; Holyhead v Caernarfon; Cardiff Met v Pontypridd; Barry v Afan Lido; Haverfordwest v Carmarthen.

Aberystwyth Town Under 19s

ABERYSTWYTH Town’s Under 19s made it two wins from two as they registered a solid 3-1 win over Carmarthen Town in front of a healthy crowd at Park Avenue on Friday.

The game started at a great pace, with Carmarthen striker Tyler Brooke in particular a testing presence - but it was the young Seasiders who took the lead midway through the first half.

Harri Horwood bravely challenged the keeper to a high ball and the referee awarded a penalty, which skipper Jack Rimmer coolly slotted home.

Unfortunately it was the end of the game for Horwood, who was proving a constant threat down the left side.

After half-time Carmarthen came back strongly, and makeshift keeper Cledan Davies pulled off a couple of cracking saves to keep Aber ahead.

Aber had to make more changes midway through the second half, but substitute Josh Crowl quickly showed his ability when he noticed the keeper off his line and produced an exquisite 25 yard chip to put the hosts 2-0 up.

This soon became three when Crowl pounced again to score, and although Carmarthen pulled a goal back, the Seasiders emerged deserved winners.

Bari Morgan’s side travel to Haverfordwest this Sunday for another strong test, but with real confidence.
