THERE is increasing cause for concern for Aberystwyth Town manager Neville Powell after his side crashed to the bottom of the JD Welsh Premier League with a fourth successive defeat last weekend.

Their 4-0 loss to mid Wales rivals Newtown leaves them with just one point and one goal from five league games, and a worrying goal difference of minus 10.

The Robins took an early lead through Neil Mitchell, before a second half brace from Joe Kenton and a late Luke Boundford goal sealed their second league win.

Aber’s Declan Walker had fired an early free kick over the bar, but as early as the sixth minute, the home side were ahead.

Ex-Seasider Jamie Reed forced a corner, and a pin-point flag kick from Craig Williams found Neil Mitchell, who rose well at the back to head just inside the far post.

Five minutes later Neil Mitchell and Ryan Sears combined to set up Reed, but Chris Mulloch got a hand to his neat flick.

Aberystwyth’s main threat came from Walker’s set-pieces, but Geoff Kellaway did cut inside Keiran Mills-Evans to let off a left-footed shot, but home keeper Dave Jones managed to cut out the danger.

Kellaway, however, sustained an injury when he challenged Joe Kenton on 27 minutes, and despite coming back on, he was finally substituted on the hour mark.

Debutant Ryan Wade’s trickery offered promise, and Craig Hobson provided a physical presence up front, forcing Jones into a save from distance - but the Seasiders struggled to find a way through.

At the other end, Reed saw his free kick deflected past the post, but Kellaway headed wide from Walker’s deep cross, before going in at the break a goal down.

The second half saw Powell take off John McKenna for Cledan Davies, and he provided some dangerous early crosses.

On 55 minutes, Declan Walker forced a finger-tip save from Jones, but the hosts immediately went down the other end, with Mullock saving well from Kenton.

The major turning point came on 67 minutes as Davies whipped in a corner from the left for Aber, and Walker headed home - only for referee Rob Jenkins to blow his whistle for a foul, adjudged to have been committed by Jonny Spittle.

A swiftly taken free kick by Dave Jones then found Joe Kenton on the half way line, and the left winger sprinted away and beat Mulloch for a well-taken goal.

Aberystwyth heads went down and after Newtown’s Kershaw had been replaced by Luke Boundford, Joe Kenton started running the Aber defence ragged.

It eventually led to Newtown’s third goal, and Kenton’s second, on 74 minutes.

A good pass from Reed found Kenton at the far post, and he coolly slotted home, giving Mulloch no chance, to make it 3-0.

Aber tried to rally, with the introductions of Joe Phillips and Luke Borelli off the bench, but it wasn’t to be their day.

Kenton almost grabbed his hat-trick with a fine effort, but then on 85 minutes Boundford, who slotted into the striker’s role after Reed went off, sealed the win.

He and Kenton linked up well on the left, before the ball was swung wide to Craig Williams on the right, and his cross was met by Boundford to volley home and put a cap on the Seasiders’ misery.
