ABERYSTWYTH Town’s hopes of making it into the top half of the Welsh Premier League table at the split were dented as three goals in the last half an hour cemented a top six spot for fourth-placed Bangor City. The Seasiders now embark on a crucial festive double header against mid Wales Newtown on Boxing Day Park Avenue (ko 1.30pm) before travelling to Latham Park for the return match on New Year's Eve.After a closely contested opening hour, a quick-fire double from Damian Allen on 60 and 69 minutes dampened Aber’s spirits on a wet Tuesday evening at Park Avenue, and sub Rodrigo Blanco bagged a third on 83 minutes to rub salt into the wounds.
On a chilly December night unchanged Aber were looking to build in their fine win at Cefn Druids, but Bangor were able to control possession, without really hurting the hosts.
Aberaeron-based Henry Jones, the former Swansea City youth teamer, went close early on for the Citizens, before Chris Jones retorted for Aber with a curling shot just wide of goal.
Brayden Shaw was at the heart of much of Bangor’s attacking efforts early on, cutting in from the left flank and giving Sam Hart plenty of space to overlap from left-back position.
Former Accrington Stanley man Shaw fired wide of Chris Mullock’s goal, and Anthony Miley also got in a header as the visitors pushed on.
Aber began to find their feet, however, and the chances started to come as Joe Clarke played a great through ball to Geoff Kellaway, who was called offside with the goal gaping.
Gary Roberts blasted over for Bangor, but then the first save of the game came at the other end from Connor Roberts, to block Jones’ free kick.
Roberts whipped a ball in for Daniel Nardiello to head over the bar, and Jones had the last chance in a tight first half, which saw Geoff Kellaway exit with an injury, to be replaced by Kostya Georgievsky on 42 minutes.
?The deadlock continued in the second half as Shaw saw his shot turned around the post by Mullock, and then at the other end Luke Borrelli was played clean through, only to be denied by a huge save from Roberts.
One mistake always looked likely to swing the game, and when Aber lost possession on the hour the Citizens worked their way into the area, and after Jones was denied, Allen popped up at the far post to open the scoring.
Bangor attacked again, with Michael Higden heading wide before Jones’ sublime right-footed volley brought an equally impressive right-handed save from Mullock around the post.
From the resultant corner, however, Allen sent in a cross cum shot from the left wing which evaded everyone and curled into the far corner for 2-0.
In response, Chris Jones played a sublime cross-field ball to sub Georgievsky, but his shot from the left wing was again parried by Roberts.
Mullock was then called upon to make another good save to deny Blanco, but the the Brazilian slid in the near channel and blasted the ball high into the roof of the net for 3-0.
Aber substitute Jack Rimmer found Borrelli inside the penalty area, but his shot glanced just inches wide and the game was well and truly over.
Just two places remain up for grabs in the race for a top six position as Aber went into a crucial festive double-header against rivals Newtown.
