MATTHEW Bishop is looking for his to continue their positive start to the pre-season when they travel to play Porthmadog at the Traeth in their third friendly match this Saturday.
The Seasiders have notched up two wins in four days away at Cymru Alliance sides, and will be keen to maintain momentum after a solid 4-0 win against Caersws on Wednesday evening.
With mainstays such as Geoff Kellaway, Luke Sherbon and Cledan Davies on the bench, and a large number of trialists included in the side, the new system took a while to bed in, but with Ricky Watts, Greg Walters and Joe Clarke, Aber found their feet.
Two minutes before the break a corner fell nicely for young centre half Ryan Woollacott to open the scoring in the visitors’ favour with a hooked volley at the far post, and the Seasiders held the lead until half-time.
Despite a number of tactical and personnel changes the visitors improved in the second half with a performance full of energy and attacking prowess, with promising young winger Kostya Georgievsky impressing down the wing on his debut.
The new signing from Port Talbot grabbed Aber’s second goal of the night on 71 minutes with a low diving header at the far post within 60 seconds of coming on.
Centre back Sam Rodon scored a third with a powerful 82nd minute header from a corner, and a trialist finished off the scoring with his fourth goal, after a good move six minutes from time.
It was another satisfying win after also winning their first pre-season friendly at Cymru Alliance champions Caernarfon 2-1 last weekend.
Goals by trialist Carl Lamb and new signing Will Bell earned a 2-1 win at the Oval, and Bishop will take heart from the way his squad is taking shape.
“The players have shown their eagerness and energy off the ball, which will be important going forward," said the Aberystwyth manager.
“It was also good to see the group of players gelling. The dressing room afterwards was a good place to be and the players were together - and this is very important.
“Nobody’s getting carried away, but we’ll hopefully move on and get better.
"We’re looking forward to another good challenge at Porthmadog on Saturday. The players will get more minutes on the pitch and we’ll look to carry on where we left off."
Meanwhile Porthmadog manager Craig Papirnyk said he was pleased with another good work-out in their 4-3 pre-season defeat to Oswestry Town on the 3G surface at Park Hall last weekend.
A lively performance produced goals from Asa Hamilton, Josh Davies and Dan Roberts, and despite the defeat there were many positives for him to take.
“Sometimes games like this just unfold and tactics go out the window,” Papirnyk said. “I was pleased the lads got a really good workout, and we will learn from certain things as individuals and as a team.
"We will now move on to training and prepare well, before welcoming Aberystwyth Town this weekend.”
